The exhibition 'As She Is', held at the 33BREE space in Cape Town, presents high-fashion style portraits that highlight the strength and beauty of women with disabilities from South Africa. This collaborative project aims to increase visibility and inclusion within the artistic community.
The portfolio, titled As She Is, features images of women with disabilities in high fashion and couture looks. The compositions are designed to promote greater visibility and integration into the local art scene.
The creation of the project resulted from the collaboration of several organizations: Bold Beauty Project, 33 BREE, The Artists Gallery, HEAT Arts Festival, Artscape Theatre, Amy Foundation SA, and SA Ubuntu Foundation.
Visually, the As She Is portfolio integrates mobility aids, such as wheelchairs, crutches, prosthetics, and guide dogs, into stylized settings.
Art lovers can visit the space on Bree Street during gallery hours until the exhibition concludes at the end of August.
Marlene le Roux, a South African artist and activist, noted: 'This is not just photography. Firstly, I am a person with a disability, as you can see. And I am a proud person with a disability, but behind this disability lies a long journey. One must understand that life with a disability is not an easy path.'
The project also involved stylist and activist Tracy-Lee Rosslind, who shared her vision: 'For me, it was about dressing these women in couture. It wasn't about that—I dressed them in clothes that allowed them to feel strong, that made them realize they have every right to be seen, heard, and influential.'
Overall, the exhibition features 17 models with various types of disabilities. The As She Is exhibition will be open at 33BREE until August 29th. Residents of Cape Town, people using the central business district, and art enthusiasts can visit the space on Bree Street during gallery working hours until the end of August.
