The Changan brand is re-entering the South African market with a range of commercial vehicles set to launch in September. This move signals a kind of cycle completion for one of the original Chinese brands in the country.
Changan first appeared in the South African market in 2006, offering compact light commercial vehicles under the 'Chana' branding, which were based on older Suzuki 'Half Loaf' models. After being liquidated in 2012, the brand returned to the country in 2025 as an entirely different automotive company, distributed by Jameel Motors, offering a more refined range of passenger cars and a modern double-cab pickup.
Jameel Motors is currently expanding its local portfolio by adding the Changan Commercial line, which will go on sale in September. Although the importer has not yet disclosed product details, it stated that the assortment will consist of five models representing a 'modern evolution' of the Suzuki-based vehicles that the brand sold in the early 2000s.
It is anticipated that these models correspond to those shown in the announcement photo: three pickups—chassis cab, single cab, and double cab—as well as a van and a minibus. These models are apparently the latest versions of the Chana Star line, which also carry the M8 and M9 designations in Pakistan, where they are equipped with 1.0 and 1.2-liter gasoline engines.
The company guarantees that the new commercial line will come with a five-year warranty or 200,000 km mileage in South Africa. Marius Vanter, Country Manager for Jameel Motors South Africa, stated: 'Chana established a strong reputation in South Africa as a reliable partner for small and medium-sized enterprises. With Changan Commercial, we continue this legacy by bringing to market a product that is proven, reliable, and ready to support the new generation of South African business.'
More detailed information will be available closer to the launch date.
