Partnership between women and men promotes gender equality

In the context of celebrating National Women's Month, observed in August, the author critically examines the vital partnership between women and men for strengthening gender equality and improving societal well-being.

The prosperity and well-being of the human family depend on the development of all potential abilities, talents, and virtues of people, as well as their contribution to the common good, regardless of gender, race, nationality, class, or religion. The full socio-economic development of the planet is impossible without the significant participation of both women and men.

The benefits of empowering women and ensuring their equal status extend beyond mere social and economic progress. Gender equality is a prerequisite for the functioning of both family relations and society as a whole. It allows women and men to make their unique contributions to the development of civilization, laying the foundation for justice, harmony, and peace.

Commentary from a Baháʼí perspective

The Baháʼí international community, in one of its statements, emphasizes that discussions about women's empowerment must go beyond simply focusing on women's participation in the economic life of society. The focus must be on unlocking the immense potential of women for world progress. It is also noted that the journey from doubt to confidence, from silence to voice, from passivity to action, cannot be understood solely through integration into the labor market or any type of global production chain.

The statement continues that capacity building must address all aspects of human existence: economic, social, intellectual, cultural, spiritual, and moral. Achieving equality is not a task that women should solve alone; it requires the joint effort of women and men to overcome outdated views and practices that limit human potential, and to build relationships based on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared responsibility.

Achieving equality requires a shift in values, worldview, and behavior among both women and men so that they can jointly contribute to the common good. Women must know their rights and opportunities and be encouraged to realize their full potential through education. They must participate in all spheres of human activity, contributing their talent, skills, and experience for the benefit of society.

Men, especially those in influential positions, must actively support the systematic inclusion of women. This should not happen as an act of condescension or assumed self-sacrifice, but as a recognition that women's contribution is essential for the collective advancement of humanity. According to Baháʼí writings, the creation of a peaceful and sustainable world civilization will be impossible without the full participation of women in all areas of human activity, and it is asserted that 'when women fully and equally participate in world affairs... war will cease.'

Thus, empowering women and achieving their equality is a shared responsibility resting on the shoulders of both women and men. Driven by the spirit and vision of the unity of the human family, women and men together can create a just, peaceful, and prosperous world for raising future generations.
