The risk of knee injuries during sports activities, particularly knee ligament tears known as ACL damage, has become a serious problem for both young athletes and ordinary people. This injury often occurs when changing direction abruptly, adopting improper posture, or making a quick turn during sports such as football, basketball, badminton, and kabaddi.
Consequently, some doctors advise athletes and general citizens to use expensive sports footwear and knee braces, but the actual benefit of these items remains questionable.
Sports footwear is not entirely useless, as proper equipment can help a player improve balance and grip on the surface. Nevertheless, there is no scientific evidence yet confirming that any specific pair of shoes can completely prevent an ACL injury.
Dr. Rahul Grover, an assistant professor in the Sports Injury Department at Safdarjung Hospital, noted that the answer to this question is not as simple as advertised. He emphasized that relying solely on a specific pair of shoes or a knee brace to protect against ACL injury is incorrect. The most reliable method of preventing ACL injuries remains what has been considered effective for many years.
To reduce the risk of injury, it is necessary to strengthen the body's muscle corset, master correct running technique, and undergo training appropriate to the sport. The better an athlete prepares their body, the lower the probability of injury. Therefore, instead of over-relying on footwear, it is wiser to focus on physical fitness, correct technique, and regular practice.
Dr. Rahul also reported that many athletes use knee braces during training or matches. In certain situations, a knee brace can provide support, but it should not be considered the most effective way to prevent injuries. If an athlete has already suffered an ACL injury, the use of a knee brace must only occur after consulting a doctor. Simply wearing a knee brace does not eliminate the risk of injury. In such cases, it is extremely important to warm up properly before the game and maintain body balance.
