However, there is a way to grow this expensive nut crop yourself at home.
Using seeds that you purchase, you can prepare a pistachio sapling. Although the process may seem complicated, it is quite possible to try growing the plant in a pot if you know the correct method. It should be noted that pistachio is not a plant that will bear fruit within a few months, so it is important to know the entire growing process and observe the necessary conditions.
For planting pistachios, you cannot use any nuts available for sale. The preferred choice is raw and unsalted pistachios. Using roasted or salted nuts for germination is not recommended.
When growing a sapling, you should choose seeds that are fresh, healthy, and of high quality. It is better to start with several seeds, as there is no guarantee that each one will sprout.
The first step is soaking the selected seeds in water at room temperature for about 24 hours. This provides the seeds with moisture and initiates the germination process.
After this, the seeds need to be taken out of the water and wrapped in a damp cloth or paper towel. It is important that the cloth is moist, but not so wet that water drips.
When a small root or sprout appears on the seed, you can proceed to planting in a pot. You must choose a container with proper drainage holes to drain excess water.
The soil for growing pistachios must drain well and must not allow waterlogging. Sandy or loamy soil is ideal, to which a little organic fertilizer can be added. When planting the sprouted seed, it should not be buried too deeply; a depth of 1-2 inches will suffice. After the seed is placed in the soil, lightly cover it with soil and water it.
Pistachios are plants that develop well in warm and dry climates, so they must be placed where there is good access to sunlight. Generally, pistachios require many hours of daily sunlight.
When watering, you must always remember to avoid excess moisture. Instead of constantly keeping the soil wet, you should water based on its moisture level. Waterlogging in the pot can damage the roots.
As the sapling grows, it will require more space for its root system to develop. If the roots begin to spread significantly in the pot or are visible from below, the plant can be transplanted into a larger container. Regularly loosen the soil in the pot and monitor the plant's growth, periodically fertilizing it with organic fertilizers as needed.
It is important to understand that the appearance of a pistachio sapling from a seed and harvesting pistachios are two different processes. A plant grown from seed may take years to start bearing fruit. Furthermore, pistachio trees require both male and female specimens, so relying on only one sapling to get fruit is difficult.
If the goal is to obtain pistachio fruits at home, purchasing a grafted sapling from a specialized nursery may be a more reliable option. Grafted plants are generally more successful in terms of fruiting compared to those grown from seeds. If you expect to eat homemade pistachios within a few months, this hope may not materialize.
