Mercedes C-Class to receive significant design and technology update by 2027

Mercedes-Benz has made substantial changes to the C-Class model, updating it in terms of design and technology. The updated sedan and wagon version is expected in South Africa in 2027.

The C-Class update goes far beyond cosmetic changes; the vehicle features significant exterior modifications, a new AI-based cabin technology, as well as engine and chassis improvements.

Since the updated car is set to arrive in South Africa in 2027, it is equipped with a significantly larger illuminated grille, consistent with the recently introduced electric version of the C-Class. Like its electric counterpart, it features star motifs in the headlights, and the redesigned front and rear bumpers give it additional uniqueness.

The refreshed lineup includes new wheel options in 18 and 19-inch diameters, along with two new exterior colors: Lavender Silver and Moody Sky Grey.

The interior retains its familiar architecture, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch vertical display. However, the steering wheel has been redesigned and now features physical switches and volume controls. Customers can also expect new upholstery colors, such as Beech Brown and Cherry Red, as well as new trim options.

Technology has undergone significant changes: the updated C-Class utilizes the MBUX fourth-generation interface and the MB.OS operating system. The vehicle's virtual assistant now employs a combination of AI agents, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Bing, to provide a highly personalized, conversational, and context-aware driving experience. The assistant is now capable of remembering short-term context during conversations.

The AI-supported interior maintains a familiar look. Furthermore, drivers can choose one of three customizable avatar styles to personalize their user experience. Artificial intelligence is deeply integrated into the navigation system, making route finding more intuitive, and the display merges Google Maps data with 3D graphics for better visual guidance.

Sound quality has also been improved, especially when ordering the expanded Burmester 3D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos and a 710-watt amplifier.

Regarding the engine, the 2.0-liter gasoline turbocharged engine with mild hybrid has undergone several refinements, including a new auxiliary compressor designed to provide stronger low-revving torque. The 2.0-liter engine is available in three configurations: the C200 produces 130 kW, the C250 produces 160 kW, and the C300 produces 190 kW.

Depending on the market, Mercedes also offers the C400e 4Matic plug-in hybrid, which can produce up to 290 kW and has an electric range of up to 100 km.

The revised C-Class also features a modified suspension with tuned spring and damping parameters. As before, customers can opt for a rear-wheel steering system capable of turning the rear wheels up to 2.5 degrees.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa reports that the new model is scheduled to arrive at local showrooms in 2027, with more detailed information to be revealed closer to the launch. The company has not commented on whether production will take place at the East London plant, whose future remains uncertain following the loss of export sales due to US tariffs.
