Devdhat Pathikkal named Player of the Match in Galle, expressing emotions

Devdhat Pathikkal was the central figure in India's victory in Galle, where the team won by 165 runs. He was awarded the Player of the Match award for his impressive innings in the first innings, where he scored 167 runs. After the game, Pathikkal openly discussed his innings, the pitch in Galle, and the challenges he has faced on various test venues throughout his career.

This match held special significance for Pathikkal. He played a key role in reaching a strong total of 462 runs in the first innings, scoring 167 runs. In the second innings, he also added 44 runs. Additionally, Manav Suthar delivered an outstanding bowling performance, taking 10 wickets. This marked Suthar's second consecutive five-wicket haul, and he was playing in his second Test match.

When asked about his successive challenging test venues, Pathikkal reflected on his journey since the beginning of his career. He noted that he started in Dharamsala, then played in Perth, and now in Galle, but stated that he could not wish for anything better. Pathikkal also expressed great joy over the victory, noting that the team displayed magnificent cricket throughout the match.

Responding to the question about significant changes in the pitch over five days, Pathikkal acknowledged the natural wear and tear on the wicket. Nevertheless, he also observed that after the third day of the match, spin became more prevalent on the field. According to him, the wicket started spinning more from the third day, but he believes that the deciding factor in the match was which team utilized its skills better.

Pathikkal did not directly agree with the notion that left-handed batsmen gained an advantage on the Galle pitch, but he cited one reason. He explained that left-arm spinners were actively bowling in the match, and the pitch was slightly slow, meaning the ball did not receive too much bounce off the surface. Under such conditions, playing against left-arm spinners was slightly easier for left-handed batsmen, which, in Pathikkal's opinion, was a key aspect of this matter.

Pathikkal's innings of 167 runs laid the foundation for India's victory. India scored 462 runs in the first innings, with Pathikkal's contribution being the most significant. K.L. Rahul and Dhruv Jurel also helped the team reach such a high score, each scoring a half-century. In the first innings, the Sri Lankan team was reduced to 284 runs. At one point, the hosts lost five wickets for 90 runs, but the partnership between Sonal Dinusha and Dikwela prevented them from facing a follow-on.

In the second innings, only three Indian batsmen crossed the ten-run mark, but Rishabh Pant's quick innings of 66 runs increased India's lead to over 370 runs. Chasing the target, Sri Lanka quickly lost the first four wickets. Dinusha and Dikwela continued to fight, extending the match to the final day. However, Ravindra Jadeja achieved a major success by dismissing Dikwela. Following pressure from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dikwela's innings also ended, and then Manav Suthar closed the Sri Lankan innings, taking four wickets in just 10 balls. Sri Lanka was reduced to 206 runs, and India won the match by 165 runs, but Pathikkal attracted the most attention after this victory.

Saeeb Akhtar spoke about his unfinished dream: he could have taken 400 Test wickets

Former Pakistani fast bowler Saeeb Akhtar, known as the Rawalpindi Express for his speed, continues to attract global cricket attention even after retiring. He himself helped Pakistan secure victories in several important matches.

According to Akhtar, if he had had leadership like Imran Khan's during his era, his Test career could have changed drastically. Akhtar admitted that he still regrets that the dream of playing under Imran Khan remained unfulfilled. He noted that instead of the 178 Test wickets he has, he could have taken over 400.

Discussing this with a Pakistani television channel, Saeeb stated that he took more than 400 wickets in first-class matches. However, in international Tests, he managed only 178 wickets in 46 games. Akhtar emphasized that Imran Khan had a talent for identifying players' best potential. When Saeeb debuted in Tests in 1997, Imran had already left international sports.

Saeeb's entire career was under different captains, and it involved many controversial moments. At the beginning of his career, Wasim Akram was the captain, and there were rumors that he initially did not want Saeeb to debut. Nevertheless, later they showed brilliant play together during the tour of India in 1999 and at the 1999 World Cup, where Pakistan reached the final.

Saeeb's career ended during the 2011 World Cup. During this period, reports emerged about disagreements between Saeeb Akhtar and the then-captain Shahid Afridi. Saeeb recounted that maintaining his pace required a daily struggle. An injection was used to draw fluid from his knees. He also mentioned that before team practice, he had to cycle and work out in the gym to relieve spasms in his knees. Injections and medication were administered into his knees, followed by ice therapy. After a match, it took him five hours to recover his body. Furthermore, Saeeb scored 247 runs in 163 one-day matches and took 21 wickets in 15 T20 matches.

Appointment of 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi as Deputy Captain of Eastern Region Team Sparks Controversy

A new controversy has arisen in Indian cricket ahead of the Dalip Trophy 2026 tournament. Questions are being raised regarding the decision to appoint 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the deputy captain of the Eastern Region team. Former Gujarat captain Priyank Panchal called the selectors' decision hasty, noting that placing leadership responsibility on such a young player could create unnecessary pressure.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been appointed as the deputy captain of the Eastern Region for the Dalip Trophy, where Ishan Kishan will lead the team. Notably, this young batter from Bihar has played only eight first-class matches despite being given the role of deputy captain, while the team also features experienced players such as Abhimanyu Ishwar, who has 113 first-class matches under his belt.

His status was elevated following a recent visit to Zimbabwe, where Vaibhav Suryavanshi demonstrated outstanding play. He scored 151 runs in three T20 International matches and was named the Player of the Series. His explosive innings of 81 runs in the third and decisive match was a key factor in India's victory.

What did Priyank Panchal say?

Former Gujarat captain Priyank Panchal wrote on social media platform X that, in his opinion, the zonal selectors should have refrained from appointing Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the deputy captain of the Eastern Region. He suggested that this could put excessive pressure on the young athlete and advised allowing him to fully master the nuances of red-ball cricket before entrusting him with such responsibilities.

Following Panchal's comment, discussions on social media intensified. Many former cricketers and fans believe that Vaibhav should first be given time to establish himself in domestic red-ball matches before taking on a leadership role.

How did the selectors defend the decision?

Meanwhile, the Eastern Region Selection Committee firmly defended its decision. Former cricketer Manish Vardhan, representing Jharkhand, told Cricinfo that this decision was not made solely considering the current tournament. He emphasized that they are looking beyond the present. The deputy captain gets the opportunity to work closely with the captain and study team management. They wanted Vaibhav to become more involved in the team's operations, as this would aid his development. He is considered an extremely talented player who is constantly maturing, and they believe this responsibility is part of his development process.

When will the Dalip Trophy begin?

The 33rd Dalip Trophy tournament will take place from August 23rd at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bangalore. In the initial stage, the Eastern Region team will face the North-Eastern Region, while the Western Region will play against the Northern Region. The winners of these two matches will proceed to the semi-finals against the Southern and Central Regions, respectively, on August 30th. The tournament final is scheduled for September 5th.
