Manav Sutar makes his mark in India's 600th match, achieving significant success in spin bowling

India played its 600th Test match in Galle, securing a convincing victory over Sri Lanka by 165 runs. This win gave India a 1-0 advantage in the two-match series. However, the main historical figure of this match was the 24-year-old left-arm spinner Manav Sutar.

In his second Test match, Sutar took 10 wickets, thus etching his name into the annals of Indian cricket. When the Sri Lankan team was chasing a target of 372 runs, they were dismissed for 206 runs in the second innings. Sutar was the hero of the victory, demonstrating brilliant performance by taking 6/55 in the second innings, completing his second five-wicket haul in his career. In the first innings, he took 4 wickets, totaling 10 wickets for the match.

Sutar debuted in June against Afghanistan. He managed to achieve the feat of 10 wickets in his second Test match. Because of this, he has been included in an exclusive list of outstanding players who have taken more than five wickets in their first two matches for India.

Sutar is now on this list alongside Hirwani and Axar Patel. Hirwani and Axar each took three instances of five wickets in their first two matches, while Shivrakrishna, Mohammad Nissar, and Sutar have two five-wicket hauls each.

Furthermore, Sutar achieved another important milestone by taking 10 wickets in his second Test match. He became one of the few players to reach his first ten-wicket match in his career with the fewest number of matches, trailing only Narendra Hirwani.

Hirwani took 16 wickets in his debut match against West Indies in Chennai in 1988. Sutar achieved this feat in his second Test match. This places him among the select Indian spinners capable of showing the potential of a ten-wicket match early in their careers.

As the match progressed at the Galle ground, the role of spinners increased. Sutar skillfully capitalized on the prevailing conditions. His performance of 6/55 in the second innings completely dashed Sri Lanka's hopes. The Sri Lankan team was bowled out for 206 runs in 77.4 overs, and Sutar single-handedly secured India's victory by taking 6 wickets in the second innings.

The foundation of India's victory was laid by the batsmen. Devdutt Padikkal (211 runs in the match), K.L. Rahul (117 runs in the match), and Rishabh Pant (105 runs in the match) made significant contributions to the game, helping India set a challenging target of 372 runs against Sri Lanka.

Winning the toss also proved beneficial for India. As the game developed, the influence of spin on the field intensified, and Indian bowlers were able to maximize this advantage. Sutar fully utilized this opportunity through his performance.

India's 600th Test match is not just a number; it represents the story of the long transformation of Indian Test cricket. In the first 100 Tests, India won only 10 matches and lost 40 games, with a win-loss ratio of only 0.25. However, the situation changed drastically between the 501st and 600th Test matches. During this period, India won 57 matches and lost only 31, raising the win-loss ratio to 1.838.

Statistics show how Indian Test cricket has evolved over more than six decades. Where the first 100 Tests were dominated by losses, between the 501st and 600th Test matches, India reached new heights in terms of victories.

The victory in the Test match in Galle by a margin of 165 runs allowed India to gain a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Now, its focus is on winning the series in the next match. Furthermore, this victory holds great significance for India's campaign in the World Test Championship (WTC).

India's 600th Test match not only recalled its glorious past but also offered a glimpse into the future through Manav Sutar's performance. 10 wickets in the second match and two five-wicket hauls—Sutar confidently announced himself as the next star of Indian spin bowling.
