There is a common perception that all medicines are produced similarly to other complex chemical products: by taking starting materials and conducting a chemical reaction to obtain the necessary molecule. However, some types of medications require a cultivation process.
Complex antibodies are an example of such drugs. Modern chemical industry does not yet possess sufficient efficiency to synthesize these molecules from scratch. Therefore, microorganisms or specialized cell cultures, including mammalian cells, are used for their production.
