The Stormers XXIII team is preparing for a critically important match against the Bulls in the Currie Cup, which will take place in Pretoria on Friday. The team is placing all its hopes on this match, as it is the last of the final two fixtures of the tournament and is crucial for maintaining chances of reaching the playoffs.
For many players on this team, this will be their first experience participating in the traditional North vs. South derby. According to assistant coach Dewaldt Duvenage, this clash is a decisive moment.
Although the Cape Town team needs other positive results, a victory on Friday at the Loftus Versfeld stadium should maintain their hopes of making it to the quarter-finals.
After five rounds of the Carling #CurrieCup, the playoff picture is beginning to take shape. Duvenage stated that the team is in a 'playoff mentality' and needs to win against the Bulls. He noted that the team has improved throughout the campaign, and their main goal was player development, which he believes was achieved.
Nevertheless, Duvenage pointed out areas for improvement, such as converting opportunities, while analyzing the game against the Bulls. He also mentioned that the team performed well against the Pumas, achieving 60% possession and territory with eight penalties, although the result did not meet expectations.
According to Duvenage, injured captain Jean-Luc du Plessis and midfielder Stefan Ungerer underwent examinations, and results are expected to determine their ability to participate in the match against the Bulls.
Despite it being a short week for the Stormers after the game in Mbombela on Saturday, Duvenage reported that the situation is similar for the Bulls. He added that training sessions went well, including a game against the URC Stormers team, which provided positive energy before the match against the Bulls.
The start of the Currie Cup matches on Friday will feature the defending champions Griquas against the Pumas in Mbombela. For the home team, this is a must-win to secure their spot among the top four, as the Cheetahs are putting pressure on Griquas. The champions have two difficult away matches, and they aim to start with a win in Nelspruit before facing the Boland Cavaliers in a tough contest in Wellington.
Many events occurred in the fifth round of the Carling #CurrieCup. Stakes have risen, with only two rounds remaining. For Free State, the visit by the Cavaliers presents a difficult task in keeping pace with the leaders of the table. Last time Boland played in Bloemfontein, they secured a victory that stopped the hosts. However, if they can win on Sunday afternoon, their place in the playoffs will be guaranteed.
The Lions face a dilemma in the Currie Cup on Friday, as they have a 'Rugby's Greatest Rivalry' match scheduled against the All Blacks on Tuesday, and some players might face the New Zealand team. Nevertheless, they are outside the spots in the national tournament playoffs, and the Sharks have already achieved several significant victories. Therefore, the guest squad must be perfectly selected to maintain the fight for a semi-final spot, but some players need to be ready for the challenge from New Zealand next week at Ellis Park.
