OpenAI's revenue grows 18% in the second quarter, but trails Anthropic

OpenAI reported an 18% increase in its revenue between the first and second quarters, although this result disappointed some investors who had predicted a faster advance by the company in competition with Anthropic.

The developer of ChatGPT informed investors that it earned US$ 6.7 billion (approximately R$ 37.5 billion) in the three months ending in June, compared to US$ 5.7 billion (R$ 31.9 billion) recorded in the first quarter.

Despite this growth, the company's operating margin became even more negative, increasing the distance needed to achieve profitability. This data was revealed by sources close to the matter to The Wall Street Journal.

The performance also placed OpenAI in a less favorable position compared to its main rival during this period. Anthropic more than doubled its revenue between the first and second quarters, reaching US$ 11.6 billion (about R$ 64.9 billion).

This was the first time Anthropic's revenue surpassed OpenAI's. Furthermore, Anthropic managed to record a modest operating profit during this interval.

Although the result fell short of certain investors' expectations, OpenAI stated that its situation would begin to improve in the third quarter. According to sources informed on the matter, the company notified investors about the acceleration of its growth rate after the launch of a new generation of artificial intelligence models in July.

The company expects these new models to be able to resume the pace of business expansion and reduce some of the advantage Anthropic gained. However, the second-quarter balance sheet shows that OpenAI's leadership in the AI sector is not guaranteed, given that Anthropic surpassed the company in quarterly revenue for the first time, while progressing towards profitability.
