August Windows update causes crashes and failures in some games

Microsoft released the August Patch Tuesday updates last week, which aim to correct over 400 security vulnerabilities. However, following the pattern of previous months, these new updates are causing difficulties on certain computers, especially among users who play specific titles.

According to Windows Latest, reports have been received indicating that after installing package KB5121003, corresponding to the August Patch Tuesday, players of games such as ARC Raiders and The Finals began experiencing crashes or driver-related failures, problems that did not exist before the Windows 11 update.

Embark Studios, responsible for both games, used Discord to clarify that package KB5121003 appears to impact the operating system's compatibility with the inpoutx64.sys driver, a component used by both titles. The developer stated that they are already developing a fix for this situation.

While awaiting a solution, affected players can follow a procedure suggested by Embark itself. There is mention of similar issues in other games, such as Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Therefore, rolling back the Patch Tuesday update is a less drastic alternative for those facing these setbacks or playing ARC Raiders and The Finals. To do this, one must go to Start Menu / Settings / Windows Update / Update History / Uninstall Updates and remove package KB5121003. This package can be reinstalled later when any associated issues are resolved.

Failures in Windows 11 resulting from system updates are not unprecedented; for example, the July 2026 Patch Tuesday affected Dell PCs, leading Microsoft to temporarily suspend the update for the affected machines. However, in this specific case, the problem appears to be significantly less severe, affecting only a small number of devices. As of yet, Microsoft has not registered any known issues on the KB5121003 package page.
