Crisis of left-backs at Kaizer Chiefs worsens due to forced tactical changes by Fernando Da Cruz

The Kaizer Chiefs team has faced an escalation of the crisis in the left-back position due to a series of injuries, forcing coach Fernando Da Cruz to seek temporary solutions.

Injury Crisis

Injuries to Paseka Mako and versatile Rivo Frosler have necessitated that Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz use improvised replacements at the left-back position. The team is experiencing a growing crisis in this defensive line as a string of injuries limits Da Cruz's options during a busy season.

The latest problem was Rivo Frosler, who suffered a second-degree hamstring tear, and his absence may last a long time. However, this versatile defender is just the latest addition to an already extensive list of injured players. In addition to him, Nkantiso Singa, Paseka Mako, and Bradley Cross are unavailable, and young Kabelo Ngqwes, who previously played as an alternative, is now also on the injury list.

The increasing number of absent players forced Da Cruz to improvise during the match against Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday. The French coach abandoned his usual four-man defensive setup and deployed a five-man defensive line, with Pule Mmodi playing as an emergency left winger, which resulted in a 1-1 draw.

This tactical maneuver helped Chiefs remain competitive against the African champions but also highlighted the lack of natural options for Da Cruz. After the match, the coach stated: 'All left-backs are injured. We have been unlucky in the last few days at the left fullback position. Between the game against Sekhukhune United and today (Saturday), we lost two more players due to injuries, Rivo (Frosler) and Kabelo (Ngqwes)'.

This crisis presents a headache for Da Cruz regarding squad selection, although it does not pose an immediate threat, especially considering the MTN8 semi-finals this weekend, which give him some time alongside the tight Betway Premiership schedule. Kaizer Chiefs confirmed that two starting players and three from the youth development academy have been loaned out to gain valuable experience at various clubs.

Frosler's versatility makes his absence another blow, but a more serious issue for Chiefs is the general lack of recognized left-backs available to the coach. The match against Sundowns showed one possible solution, where Mmodi adapted to the wing-back role. Da Cruz may also consider maintaining the five-man structure or moving another versatile player to this position, depending on the opponent. It remains unclear whether this tactical adjustment will become a regular practice. Nevertheless, Chiefs face an obvious challenge, and Da Cruz's ability to find a short-term solution in the absence of several players in one position could be decisive in maintaining Amakhosi's competitiveness across different fronts.
