Patrick Vieira appointed head coach of the Senegalese national team

The Football Federation of Senegal (FSF) officially appointed Patrick Vieira, a former French national team player and iconic Arsenal player, as the head coach of the national team on Tuesday. This decision was presented as a 'strategic move' aimed at aligning with the country's current sporting ambitions.

Return to Roots

Vieira was born in Dakar, Senegal, but moved to France at the age of eight. He led the legendary unbeaten Arsenal squad during the 2003–2004 Premier League campaign and earned 107 appearances for the French national team, winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

He takes over the management after a painful exit from the 2026 World Cup. After group stage losses to France and Norway, Senegal managed to reach the playoffs with a 5–0 victory over Iraq. A critical moment came in the Round of 32 against Belgium, when Senegal held a comfortable two-goal lead in the 86th minute, but Juri Tilemans orchestrated a crushing comeback, scoring an equalizer and a winner in extra time, securing a 3–2 victory for Belgium.

Instability under Pape Thiaw

Former coach Pape Bona Thiaw initially established himself by leading the Senegalese domestic team to a historic Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022, before taking charge of the senior team in 2024. However, the real crisis began at the 2025 Africa Cup tournament in January. Thiaw led Senegal to the final against Morocco until chaos erupted when the referee awarded Morocco a penalty in stoppage time. Thiaw called on his players to leave the field in protest.

The Confederation of African Football reacted sharply, banning Thiaw for five matches, fining him $100,000 (approximately 1.63 million francs), and stripping Senegal of the AFCON title. This scandal cast a dark shadow over the team during the transition to the 2026 World Cup campaign. Less than two weeks after being eliminated from the World Cup against Belgium, the Football Federation of Senegal (FSF) dismissed the 45-year-old coach, as the fallout revealed deep behind-the-scenes disagreements.

FSF President Abdoulaye Fall stated that the team was surrounded by 'toxicity' after Thiaw demanded a salary increase during the tournament.

From Club to National Coaching Role

After retiring as a player in July 2011, Vieira transitioned into coaching, accumulating over ten years of experience on the sidelines in North America and Europe. Previously, he worked with clubs such as New York City FC (2016–2018), OGC Nice (2018–2020), Crystal Palace (2021–2023), RC Strasbourg (2023–2024), and Genoa (2024–2025). Senegal notes this as his first step into international management after a decade in club football.

As qualifying matches for the 2027 Africa Cup will begin next month, Vieira takes on this responsible role with high expectations. He is tasked with restoring unity to the divided Senegalese dressing room and returning the 'Lions of Teranga' to the status of one of Africa's leading football nations.
