Brugge Diptych: Temporary Pavilion Designed for the 2021 Bruges Triennial

The Brugge Diptych is a temporary pavilion commissioned specifically for the 2021 Bruges Triennial. This project is situated next to a quiet residential canal and borders an abandoned 15th-century residence located in a densely protected UNESCO district.

It is important to note that the structure does not interact directly with the city; it rests on fifteen pontoons, which constitute the only authorized points of contact. Internally, the design features a transformation in framing. On one side, double 2x4 beams are arranged in a restricted sequence, while on the opposite side, 2x8 pieces expand the space, doubling the rhythm and subtly modifying the perception of scale. This interaction between different frequencies generates a sense of serial instability.

The pavilion functions as a double approximation of the neighboring house, sharing similarities in size and general appearance but presenting a visibly fragmented condition. Its walls are partially open and its interior is segmented. Viewed from most angles, the pavilion appears unfinished or discontinuous. This effect of estrangement ultimately makes the adjacent house more understandable, transforming it into a provisional replica.
