The legislative body of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan has approved a bill concerning the management of radioactive waste. This legislation introduces mechanisms to ensure safety at all stages of handling radioactive waste and also provides for measures to protect the population, property, and the environment from its harmful effects.
According to the adopted law, mandatory state registration and control of all types of radioactive waste are being introduced throughout Uzbekistan. Furthermore, a state register of radioactive waste will be created to systematize data on the quantity, location, and movement of these materials.
Such registration is intended to reduce the probability of loss, unauthorized use, or theft of radioactive waste. A separate set of provisions establishes safety requirements for sites designated for the storage and disposal of radioactive waste, covering design, construction, operation, and decommissioning.
The bill also defines procedures for financing relevant measures. Expenses related to the safe handling of radioactive waste must be covered by the entities that generated or own this waste.
During the review of the document, lawmakers noted that the adoption of this law should contribute to improving state supervision over radioactive waste management, implementing modern safety measures, and strengthening the protection of people and the ecology.
