Signs have emerged that Apple is developing AirPods equipped with built-in cameras. This unusual idea could soon become a reality within the Apple ecosystem, and there is a possibility they will be introduced in the near future, possibly in September alongside the iPhone 18 lineup.
A hint about these headphones was found in a short video included in the recently released beta version of macOS Tahoe 26.7. The video, posted by the account @aaronp613 on X, shows a person using AirPods while holding and looking at a book. A voiceover accompanies this video, mentioning Apple's Visual Intelligence technology:
"With Visual Intelligence, your world can be saved. Saw something you liked? Just ask me to save it for later."
The voiceover suggests that the cameras in the AirPods are not intended for recording photos or videos. However, this might be achievable in some way, with the captured content potentially being saved to an iPhone. Nevertheless, the main focus appears to be enabling Visual Intelligence to 'see' what the user sees to perform related actions, such as answering questions about an object.
In this context, camera-equipped AirPods could also act as 'eyes' for Siri, allowing the assistant to perform tasks like translating a road sign into another language or providing information about a piece of art.
According to @aaronp613, the new AirPods would also be able to warn the user if hair is covering the cameras and would offer a safe pairing mode requiring the headphones to be placed in the case to perform this procedure.
Currently, there are no details available regarding the appearance of the proposed new AirPods. But in the video, they look very similar to the current AirPods Pro, with the main distinguishing feature being slightly thicker stems.
Apple has not yet provided any information about these AirPods, so there are no specific dates. However, since the video appeared in the beta version of macOS Tahoe 26.7, it can be assumed that an official announcement is close. In September, Apple will hold an event that will likely serve as a platform for presenting the iPhone 18 lineup, and it is quite probable that the camera AirPods will be unveiled at the same time.
