After protests in Patna, Bihar government releases announcement for TRE-4 teacher recruitment

In response to protests comparable to movements in Delhi and Ranchi, the Bihar government reacted hastily. When student candidates took to the streets for a prolonged hunger strike in Gardanibagh, Patna, on Tuesday morning, administrative circles were thrown into disarray, similar to what occurred at Jantar Mantar and the Jayaprakash Singh Stadium in Ranchi.

As a result, just a few hours after the hunger strike began, the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) published an official notification for the fourth phase of the school teacher recruitment exam (TRE-4.0). This event is regarded by millions of unemployed youth and activists in Bihar as a significant victory.

According to the notification published by the Commission, this fourth phase will recruit teachers for a total of 32,388 vacancies. The application portal will open on September 1, 2026, with a deadline of September 30, 2026. These vacancies cover primary, secondary, and higher education.

Prior to this, on Tuesday (August 18), thousands of candidates led by student leader Dilap Kumar began an indefinite hunger strike at the demonstration site in Gardanibagh. The candidates clearly stated that the Ministry of Education, Mítilesh Tiwari, must immediately fulfill its July promise regarding the publication of the announcement or resign.

The students warned that if the notification did not appear within five days, they would besiege the legislative assembly. The Bihar government wished to avoid the escalation of large movements, similar to those happening in Delhi and Jharkhand, so the notification was released in a hurry before evening.

Despite the atmosphere in Gardanibagh changing after the notification was issued, protesting students emphasize that they will monitor not only promises but also adherence to written rules and transparency. Furthermore, the government must respond to other student demands, such as conducting exams in a single phase, abolishing contract weightage in BSSC, and the issue of librarian recruitment, which has been pending for 18 years.
