The lifestyle pickup market in India is becoming increasingly interesting as the expected Mahindra Scorpio Lifestyler and the new Toyota Hilux prepare for a direct confrontation in this segment. Both models are built on a traditional body-on-frame platform, but the main competition will be based on price, features, and performance. Mahindra has added a range of features to its new pickup that are not even present in the new Hilux.
Mahindra recently announced prices for the Scorpio Lifestyler, stating that its starting price will be below 19.79 lakh rupees. Although the launch is planned for next year, the company provided preliminary price estimates. On the other hand, the Toyota Hilux has been updated and introduced to the market in a completely new form, with a starting price of 31.99 lakh rupees. Thus, there is a price difference between the two models exceeding 12 lakh rupees.
Mahindra has not yet disclosed the official engine specifications for the Scorpio Lifestyler. However, it is speculated that it may be equipped with a 2.2-liter mHawk diesel engine or a 2.0-liter mStallion Direct-Injection turbocharged petrol engine. These engines are similar to those installed in the Scorpio-N and will be paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox.
As for the Hilux powertrain, it uses a 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that generates 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque. It is connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter. Furthermore, the Hilux offers 4x2 and 4x4 drive options.
Regarding features, the Scorpio Lifestyler has received many advanced functions. Among them are a large portrait touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, connected car technology, and various terrain driving modes. Additionally, the model is enhanced with features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, a 360-degree view camera, Level 2 ADAS system, and a start/stop button.
While the Hilux also boasts features like wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, connected car technology, powered and ventilated front seats, multi-terrain modes, OTA updates, a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 ADAS driver assistance system.
The first difference lies in the braking system: the Scorpio Lifestyler is equipped with rear disc brakes, whereas the new Toyota Hilux still uses a rear drum brake system. Rear discs make the Scorpio Lifestyler more modern in terms of braking equipment, as they dissipate heat better during frequent or prolonged braking. This represents an important mechanical difference between the two lifestyle pickups.
The second advantage belongs to the Scorpio Lifestyler—the presence of automatic climate control. According to teasers and sketches released by Mahindra, the Scorpio Lifestyler features automatic climate control, which is absent in the new Toyota Hilux. This means the Scorpio Lifestyler might be more comfortable for daily use when regulating temperature. Mahindra's focus is not only on powerful design but also on creating a more functional cabin.
The third significant difference relates to the wheels. The Scorpio Lifestyler is fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels, while the new Hilux uses 17-inch rims. The larger 18-inch wheels give the Scorpio Lifestyler a more imposing and aggressive look on the road, while the Hilux maintains a more traditional approach with its 17-inch set.
This does not mean that the Scorpio Lifestyler surpasses the Hilux in all aspects. The main strength of the Hilux lies in years of consumer trust. At the same time, Mahindra is entering this segment with a new product. Although the company claims that this pickup differs from the Scorpio-N in many ways, its foundation remains in the Scorpio. Moreover, the significant price difference, reaching 12 lakhs, will directly impact sales.
