MBBS students from the Bhagat Phul Singh Women's Medical College in Sonipet, Haryana, have started a protest demanding enhanced safety measures following several instances of harassment. After incidents involving two medical college interns, these students gathered at the director's office on Tuesday.
The students claim that adequate conditions for their safety are not provided within the campus premises. Consequently, a large number of medical students are conducting a demonstration, urging the college administration to strengthen the security system.
According to available information, separate incidents involving two medical college students occurred two days ago. The police registered complaints for both cases. Despite the police action, the medical college students remain dissatisfied with the level of safety on campus. They emphasize that ensuring the safety of students studying and interning at the medical college is the responsibility of the college administration, which prompted them to begin a sit-in strike outside the director's office.
The main demand of the protesting students is the creation of reliable conditions to protect female students and interns on the medical campus. The students insist on further strengthening the security system on the college grounds so that similar incidents do not recur. An atmosphere of concern has arisen among other medical college students following the incidents involving the two students. During the demonstration, the students questioned the college administration about their safety and demanded appropriate measures be taken.
On this matter, the Haryana Congress party also reacted on social media platform X. Congress stated, 'If they cannot ensure the safety of their daughters, then it is an incompetent government.' The party added that cases of sexual harassment against daughters are happening every day. In its post, it was stated that the audacity of people with distorted mindsets is increasing due to the lack of action against the guilty. Congress mentioned the case of harassment of an intern at the Sonipet medical college and raised the issue of the demonstration held on campus.
In its message, Haryana Congress also noted that the phrase 'Keep your daughters at home' should be added, criticizing the Bharatiya Janata Party against the slogan 'Save daughter, educate daughter.' Congress questioned the government and the administration regarding sexual harassment. Nevertheless, the police registered cases based on the students' complaints, and now the medical college students are demanding specific measures from the campus to ensure their safety.
As of now, no official response from the college administration on this matter has been received. Meanwhile, the Sonipet police promptly took action and arrested a suspect in the harassment of the students, named Dipak. The search for other individuals is ongoing.
