Apple software analysis points to future devices, including foldable iPhone and camera AirPods

The latest version of Apple's software has provided new insights into products the company may introduce later this year. References to unannounced devices, such as camera AirPods, various iPhone, Mac, and home gadgets models were found in the fresh build of macOS.

According to a report from MacRumors, the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate, released on August 17th, contains mentions of several products that Apple has not yet publicly unveiled. These findings appeared just before Apple's annual September event, which is likely to focus on the new iPhone lineup. The software also hints at the appearance of a foldable iPhone and new camera-equipped AirPods, confirming earlier reports about Apple's plans to go beyond standard iPhone updates this year.

Camera AirPods could arrive as early as September

The most obvious new direction is AirPods integrating cameras. The macOS 26.7 release candidate includes a video demonstrating how camera AirPods work in conjunction with Apple's Visual Intelligence feature. This clip was discovered by MacRumors analyst and published by them on X.

In the demonstration, a person holds a book in front of the AirPods. The camera captures the book, and Visual Intelligence uses the captured information to recognize it and save details. The video suggests that the cameras could allow the earbuds to understand the user's surroundings and transmit this information to Apple's AI-based functions.

MacRumors noted that the camera AirPods have an internal identifier B790. The report also mentioned that this identifier was previously linked to reports by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, who suggested the product might launch as early as September. This would mean that the AirPods would appear simultaneously with the expected iPhone launch if the company decides to present them at the same event.

Foldable iPhone also appears in the software

The long-awaited foldable iPhone is another major product mentioned in the macOS code. MacRumors identified this device using the internal identifier V68, which they believe corresponds to the foldable iPhone. In the software references, the device is likely to be named iPhone Ultra.

The foldable iPhone has been part of Apple's product roadmap for 2026 for several months. It was anticipated that Apple would introduce its first foldable iPhone in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series. Earlier reports indicated a book-like design, a larger internal screen, and a smaller external display.

The latest software references do not confirm the final specifications or release date of the product. However, the presence of the device in the release candidate is additional evidence that Apple is preparing software support for hardware approaching release.

Other products in the code

The macOS 26.7 release candidate contains mentions not only of iPhones and AirPods. Among them are:

  • Apple Home Hub (J490, J491): It seems Apple is working on a new smart home hub. J490 is presumably a version with a built-in base, while J491 may be intended for wall mounting. The device is expected to work with Siri and become the core of Apple's smart home ecosystem.
  • HomePod mini 2 (B525): The code refers to a device under the codename B525, believed to be the next HomePod mini. The current HomePod mini uses identifier B520. The new model may receive a new chip and other internal upgrades.
  • Home accessory (J229): Apple is also developing a device with the identifier J229. It was previously reported that it might have multiple sensors, detect alarm sounds, and take pictures. This could indicate a security camera or another smart home accessory, although its exact purpose is unclear for now.
  • Pebble: The name 'Pebble' is present in the software, which Bloomberg previously referred to as Apple's internal name for homeOS—the operating system expected to power future smart home devices.
  • Other home devices: Two additional identifiers are also found in the software: HomeAccessory17,2 and HomeAccessory17,3. Their purpose is currently unknown.
  • New color options: Rose Pink, Silver, Space Gray, and Starlight are listed in the code as possible colors for the upcoming home accessory. It is unclear which specific product these colors belong to.
  • Visual reasoning: The reference to 'audio_accessory_visual_reasoning' suggests that Apple may be developing a feature allowing an audio device to use visual information for AI-related tasks. This could be related to a new smart home hub, but the exact application is unknown.

Therefore, conclusions drawn from the software should not be considered a complete list of products Apple will unveil in September. The software code may show that Apple is preparing support for a device without confirming when or if the product will reach consumers.

What to expect from the Apple September event

The September launch is still primarily expected to focus on the iPhone. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be the main stars of the event, while the foldable iPhone could be the most significant new addition to Apple's smartphone lineup. MacRumors reported that camera AirPods may also appear at the event, based on early reports and the latest software data.

It is also expected that Apple will update the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 this year. Series 12 is likely to retain its current design but may receive a faster S-series chip, improved health and fitness features, and a larger battery for extended battery life. Ultra 4, according to the report, may receive a similar chip upgrade and feature a thinner design and enhanced sensor capabilities.

Consequently, the latest macOS references provide insight into Apple's broader product strategy. Instead of relying solely on annual updates to existing devices, Apple appears to be working on new ways for its hardware to interact with AI, sensors, and the user's environment. If these reports are accurate, the Apple September event may give us our first look at how these products will function together.

Apple video hints at upcoming AirPods with integrated cameras

Signs have emerged that Apple is developing AirPods equipped with built-in cameras. This unusual idea could soon become a reality within the Apple ecosystem, and there is a possibility they will be introduced in the near future, possibly in September alongside the iPhone 18 lineup.

A hint about these headphones was found in a short video included in the recently released beta version of macOS Tahoe 26.7. The video, posted by the account @aaronp613 on X, shows a person using AirPods while holding and looking at a book. A voiceover accompanies this video, mentioning Apple's Visual Intelligence technology:

"With Visual Intelligence, your world can be saved. Saw something you liked? Just ask me to save it for later."

The voiceover suggests that the cameras in the AirPods are not intended for recording photos or videos. However, this might be achievable in some way, with the captured content potentially being saved to an iPhone. Nevertheless, the main focus appears to be enabling Visual Intelligence to 'see' what the user sees to perform related actions, such as answering questions about an object.

In this context, camera-equipped AirPods could also act as 'eyes' for Siri, allowing the assistant to perform tasks like translating a road sign into another language or providing information about a piece of art.

According to @aaronp613, the new AirPods would also be able to warn the user if hair is covering the cameras and would offer a safe pairing mode requiring the headphones to be placed in the case to perform this procedure.

Currently, there are no details available regarding the appearance of the proposed new AirPods. But in the video, they look very similar to the current AirPods Pro, with the main distinguishing feature being slightly thicker stems.

Apple has not yet provided any information about these AirPods, so there are no specific dates. However, since the video appeared in the beta version of macOS Tahoe 26.7, it can be assumed that an official announcement is close. In September, Apple will hold an event that will likely serve as a platform for presenting the iPhone 18 lineup, and it is quite probable that the camera AirPods will be unveiled at the same time.
