Subhman Gill criticized after two unsuccessful innings against Prabhath Jayasuriya in Galle Test match

The first match of the two-series Test between India and Sri Lanka in Galle was ongoing. Sri Lanka scored 284/10 runs in the first half of the match. In response, the Indian team was bowled out, scoring 462/10 runs.

On the fourth day of the match, which took place on Tuesday, August 18, the Indian team batted in the second half. In this innings, the captain of the Indian team, Subhman Gill, was dismissed by Prabhath Jayasuriya, having scored only 8 runs. Gill played his innings by facing 20 deliveries and scoring 8 runs.

Notably, Captain Gill could not make a significant contribution in the first innings either, where he was also out to Prabhath Jayasuriya. Prabhath caught him with his spin bowling, and Lahiru Udara Igalagamage took the catch. In the first innings, Gill scored 16 runs off 28 balls. Overall, Gill scored 24 runs across both innings.

Despite being considered an excellent spinner, Gill appeared helpless against Prabhath Jayasuriya in both innings. Now Gill must prove his abilities in the second Test, which will begin on August 23 in Colombo.

The Indian squad for the Galle Test included: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Subhman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Manav Chatur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prithvi Shaw.

The Sri Lankan squad for the Galle Test included: Lahiru Udara, Nishan Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal, Chamindu Mendis, Danjaney de Silva (captain), Sonal Dinusha, Niroshan Dickve (WK), Kesara Nuwantha, Prabhath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumar, Asitha Fernando.

Sri Lanka Captain Dunjaya Reveals Plan to Counter India in Galle

Sri Lanka captain Dunjaya Silva shared his strategy ahead of the first Test match between India and Sri Lanka, which will begin in Galle on August 15th. Instead of shocking India by giving them a difficult track from the start, Sri Lanka intends to stretch the game into the fourth or fifth day.

The plan is to allow the batsmen to bat early in the match, and then, as the pitch ages, use spinners as the most potent weapon against the Indian team. Dunjaya Silva is aware that Indian batsmen have recently faced difficulties on turning surfaces, as demonstrated in home series against New Zealand and South Africa.

Nevertheless, the Sri Lankan captain does not want to mistakenly assume this is a permanent weakness for the visitors. He emphasized that despite losses at home against New Zealand and South Africa, the Indian team has not forgotten how to play on turning pitches, and they will certainly strive to return to that form.

A key part of Sri Lanka's strategy is prolonging the match. The behavior of the surface in Galle can change over time. After the pitch breaks up and hardens, the role of spinners increases. Dunjaya stated that if they manage to extend the match to the fourth and fifth days, their chances of winning will increase. They hope to create such difficult conditions for their opponents to put pressure on them within the series.

Although there are no guarantees of significant turn from day one in Galle, recent rains in Sri Lanka have maintained humidity. According to Dunjaya Silva, given the current weather, the pitch might remain favorable for batsmen in the first two or three days. However, after exposure to the sun and play, the surface may deteriorate, which would give an advantage to the spinners. This is why the hosts value both spinners and fast bowlers. The initial moisture will help the seamers, and Sri Lanka intends to capitalize on this.

The captain also noted that the team's main strength in local conditions is not just about the ball spinning. Batsmen need to understand how the pitch changes and make decisions about defense or risk accordingly. Dunjaya said: 'We know how to advance our innings. We know when the ball will start to spin. Many batsmen get lost when it starts spinning and don't know how to play in those conditions.' Sri Lanka considers this experience to be its advantage against India.

If the hosts' strategy succeeds, the role of Prabath Jayasuriya will be crucial. The left-arm spinner has excellently utilized the Galle conditions and consistently troubled foreign batsmen. Dunjaya pointed to his spinner's experience, noting that among the current players of both teams, Jayasuriya possesses extensive experience in Galle conditions.

He added: 'Statistically, we have an advantage. Prabath has played more matches here than other players from both teams, especially in Galle. Over many years, his performance has been strong against various foreign batting lineups. I call this a plus for Sri Lanka.'

Dunjaya called the absence of Jasprit Bumrah in this series a serious blow for the visitors. Nevertheless, due to Bumrah's absence, the captain does not wish to show leniency. He asserts that the Indian team still has many 'match winners,' and Sri Lanka has prepared for them. This confidence was also gained after their recent tour of the West Indies, where their batsmen scored centuries and their bowlers showed impact.

Interestingly, Dunjaya considered KL Rahul the biggest threat, rather than Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, or Rishabh Pant. He stated: 'From an experience perspective, K.L. Rahul will be our biggest threat. He has performed well globally. He has also played in Sri Lanka and knows the local conditions well.' Rahul was part of the Indian team during their visit to Sri Lanka in 2017, highlighting the high value the host places on his experience.

Ravindra Jadeja imitated Kuldeep Yadav's bowling action, Gautam Gambhir couldn't hide his laughter

The Indian team is preparing for a two-match test series against Sri Lanka, concluding the final stage of training activities. During the second day of the three-day friendly match against the Sri Lankan team (SLC XI), a humorous incident occurred that helped lighten the mood in the Indian camp.

Ravindra Jadeja suddenly started bowling in the manner of spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Seeing this scene, head coach Gautam Gambhir could not contain his laughter. A recorded video of this funny moment showed how Jadeja copied Kuldeep's bowling characteristics, including his characteristic run-up to the ball, slightly exaggerating the action, which caused bursts of laughter in the dressing room.

Kuldeep Yadav is a left-arm wrist spinner, and his bowling technique differs significantly from Ravindra Jadeja's style, who usually uses a very short run-up when left-arm spinning. When Jadeja tried to replicate Kuldeep's bowling, the sight was quite comical. During the friendly match, both players got the opportunity to bowl long spells.

In the match, Jadeja performed successfully, taking two wickets while conceding 64 runs in 15 overs. His victims were Pasindu Suriyabanda and Ramesh Mendis. Kuldeep Yadav, bowling 18 overs, conceded 76 runs and also took two wickets, dismissing Ahana Vikramsinghe and Anjalu Bandara. Besides them, left-arm spinner Manav Sutaran also impressed by taking two wickets while conceding only 33 runs in 13 overs.

The Sri Lankan team declared its first innings with a score of 363 runs, losing 8 wickets. After bowling, Ravindra Jadeja demonstrated usefulness as a batsman. When India lost 4 wickets with a score of 174 runs, Jadeja, along with Manav Sutaran, stabilized the game. He scored 63 runs off 117 balls, using 7 fours, after which he sustained an injury and was forced to leave the field, giving other batsmen a chance to practice.

Devdutt Padikkal became the main star of the Indian batting, scoring a century, thereby strengthening his claim for the number three position in the Gaul Test match. Thanks to Padikkal's century and the contribution of the lower order players, the Indian team scored 357 runs on the second day, losing 6 wickets.

Indian team arrives in Sri Lanka; Sai Sudarshan absent due to injury, replacement discussed

The Indian team has arrived in Sri Lanka ahead of the upcoming two-match Test series. However, 24-year-old left-hander Sai Sudarshan could not join the squad as he is still recovering from a big toe injury.

He sustained the injury during the Vijay Hazare Trophy match and subsequently underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE). The medical team is closely monitoring his recovery, and reports indicate that he has not yet received medical clearance from the BCCI. He will only be able to join the team after receiving the green light.

Before the start of the Test series, the Indian squad is scheduled to play a three-day practice match against the Sri Lankan team on August 7th. The first Test is planned for August 15-19 in Galle, while the second and final Test will take place from August 23-27 in Colombo.

Who will play at number three for Sri Lanka?

The team management views Sai Sudarshan as a potential player for the No. 3 position in the Test match lineup. Nevertheless, he has not fully cemented this spot, and his performance has been regularly questioned. Despite this, his performance with 81 runs in a single Test match against Afghanistan boosted his confidence.

If he cannot recover fully in time, there is a possibility that Devdhadh Padikkal might get a chance to feature in the starting XI for the first Test.

The Indian squad for the Test series in Sri Lanka includes: Shubman Gill (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Sai Sudarshan, Dhruva Jurrel (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Sutara, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnaur Barada, Devdhadh Padikkal, Akib Nabi, and Saransh Jana.
