How the PMFME scheme helps Uttar Pradesh agricultural products gain recognition from farm to market

While the 'One District, One Product' (ODOP) program in Uttar Pradesh focuses on handicrafts and manufacturing, there is a separate initiative based on a similar concept that deals with food and agricultural products. This program is the 'Prime Minister's Micro Food Processing Enterprises Skill Enhancement Scheme' (PMFME) from the central government, launched in 2020 as part of the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' campaign.

The PMFME scheme functions on the same principle as 'One District, One Product,' but it is exclusively focused on food products. Each state selects a specific food product for its districts that is widely grown or produced in that region, whether it be fruits, vegetables, grains, or traditional foods.

In February 2024, the central government's Ministry of Food Processing Industries published a list for 713 districts across 35 states/union territories, including all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Under the PMFME scheme, farmers, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), cooperatives, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) associated with the selected products are provided access to credit to support infrastructure, assistance with branding and marketing, and technology modernization. This program was launched nationwide from 2020 to 2025 with a total budget of 10,000 crore rupees, with expenditures shared between the central and state governments.

The goal of this approach is to unite scattered small producers under a single brand so they can benefit from large-scale raw material procurement, shared facilities, and marketing. The program also develops national brands for some selected products in collaboration with organizations such as NAFED and TRIFED; for example, the 'Madhumantra' brand for multi-colored honey from Saharanapra.
