Positive trends are observed in the Indian labor market. According to the latest data, the unemployment rate among the population aged 15 and over in July 2026 decreased to 5.1%. During this period, the number of people employed or participating in job searches within the labor force increased.
According to fresh statistics published by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Government of India, both the Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) and the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) showed growth in July, while the unemployment rate was lower than in June.
The overall LFPR for the population aged 15 and over in July was 55.4%, compared to 54.4% in June. This represents an increase of one percentage point over the month. The LFPR reflects the share of the working-age population that is either employed or looking for work. The rise in LFPR was recorded in both rural and urban areas, with the improvement being more pronounced in rural areas.
Increase in LFPR in rural areas
In rural regions, the LFPR increased by 1.4 percentage points compared to June, reaching 58% in July. This indicates that more people in villages joined the job search or entered the workforce.
An improvement in female labor force participation was also noted in July. The female LFPR reached 34.4%, which is 1.7 percentage points higher than in June. A particularly noticeable increase in female participation was observed in rural areas. The rural female WPR rose from 34.7% in June to 37.2% in July, indicating an increase in the proportion of working women in rural areas.
The overall WPR for the population aged 15 and over in July was 52.5%. This marks the first increase in this indicator since February 2026. The WPR shows what percentage of the total population is actually employed. In rural areas, the WPR reached 55.4% in July, which is 1.6 percentage points higher than in June and 1 percentage point higher than the July level last year.
In July, the overall unemployment rate was 5.1%, which is lower than both the June rate and the July rate of last year. The decrease in the unemployment rate was recorded among both men and women compared to June. Thus, the July data demonstrates a simultaneous improvement in several key labor market indicators: an increase in the number of labor force participants, a rise in the employed population share, and a decrease in unemployment. However, future monthly reports will determine whether this improvement is a temporary change or the beginning of sustainable growth in the labor market.
