The organization for school reconstruction reported that 2407 school construction projects were completed last year (from March 2025 to 2026). Additionally, over 2300 classrooms are planned for construction this year.
Khamidreza Khan-Mohammadi, the head of this organization, also spoke about the implementation of solar power plants in educational institutions. He noted that the project to install solar energy with a total capacity of 1260 megawatts in 12,000 schools has begun.
He added that work has been carried out at approximately 2500 power plants, and equipment for another 5000 out of the total 12,000 has already been purchased and prepared.
Regarding commitments made by school construction sponsors, Khan-Mohammadi stated that the total amount of donations last year was 286 trillion rials (equivalent to approximately 155 million US dollars). To date, new commitments totaling 97 trillion rials (about 52 million dollars) have been registered.
Sponsors' Contribution to School Construction
In February 2025, government press secretary Fatemeh Mohajerani stated that about 51 percent of schools in the country were built with the assistance of sponsors. According to her, the participation of sponsors in building schools has significantly increased in recent years, resulting in 48 to 51 percent of schools being established through their financial aid.
She emphasized that the efforts of the sponsors demonstrate their commitment to improving educational opportunities and developing educational infrastructure, which can have a profound positive impact on education, students, and the country's future. The official representative continued, noting that the current administration is focused on expanding educational infrastructure and building new schools to replace temporary ones, even in areas with only one or two students.
Fatemeh Mohajerani specifically highlighted that education, educational equality, and eliminating educational deficits are among the main priorities of the current administration.
Solar-Powered Schools
The national plan to equip about 12,000 schools across the country with solar power plants started in June with the installation of a 5-kilowatt system at a technical college in Tehran. Priority is given to schools affected by the war, boarding schools, schools in border areas, and under-resourced regions. Donors have taken responsibility for covering the costs, and the Clean Energy Organization provides the necessary equipment to the selected schools. Provincial officials and power grids are also participating in the preparation and installation, as reported by IRNA.
Currently, 12 out of 31 provinces have announced readiness, and the goal is to equip all 12,000 schools with 5-kilowatt systems by mid-September. There are about 100,000 public schools in the country, more than 60 percent of which are capable of installing solar panels.
In November 2025, Majid Parsa, head of the Tehran Department of Education, announced that by the end of the past Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2026), 1200 schools in Tehran province would be equipped with rooftop solar panel systems. This initiative followed an agreement with the Tehran Governor's Office to install five-kilowatt systems in each participating school.
Parsa noted that the project will initially be implemented in a pilot mode to assess performance, maintenance, and grid integration. According to him, the Department of Education has already equipped five schools with pilot solar systems that have shown promising results. He also added that solar-powered schools can play a vital role in energy conservation, providing clean electricity for their own needs and potentially feeding surplus energy into the national grid.
