The BEST Workers Union has decided to intensify its protest regarding the unfulfilled demands of the employees of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST). The union's General Secretary, Shashank Rao, announced that they will commence an indefinite hunger strike starting August 18. This movement will raise not only the demands of current BEST employees but also issues related to employees of weight lease buses operated by private companies and retired employees.
Among the union's main demands is the fulfillment of long-pending salary agreements for BEST employees. The union specifically demands the immediate implementation of salary agreements for the periods 2016 to 2021 and 2021 to 2026. Additionally, there is a demand to implement the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission for employees and provide them with the same pay scale as Municipal Corporation of Mumbai employees.
The BEST Workers Union has also raised the issue of employees working through private companies under the weight lease arrangement. The union states that these employees should receive salary and benefits based on the principle of 'equal pay for equal work.' Furthermore, there is a demand for the timely release of gratuity and other final dues for retired employees. Highlighting the financial condition of the BEST undertaking, the union has also demanded the immediate approval of the necessary financial resources for its operation.
According to the union, this indefinite hunger strike will begin at 11:30 AM on August 18 at the BEST Workers Union office located at 42 Kennedy Bridge in Mumbai Opera House. General Secretary Shashank Rao clarified that the hunger strike will continue until a decision is reached on the pending demands of the employees.
