According to a report by the Hong Kong South China Morning Post, China has tested an aircraft with an integrated fuselage design capable of carrying over 800 passengers. This project features a wingspan of 85 meters and a length of 43 meters, with a wing area of approximately 1,395 square meters.
The development was carried out by the China Aerodynamic Research and Development Center (CARDC). The projected cruising speed of the design is Mach 0.8, which is below the speed of sound. Unlike traditional aircraft where the fuselage, wings, and tail section are separate, the integrated design incorporates a significant portion of the airframe into the load-bearing structure, potentially enhancing aerodynamic efficiency.
This concept aligns with trends being explored by other companies, such as American JetZero, whose developing Z4 model is designed to carry around 250 passengers, although the Chinese project proposes a much larger scale.
Researchers conducted tests on a 1:52 scale model, which measured about 80 centimeters in length and 1.6 meters in wingspan, within CARDC's transonic wind tunnel at speeds ranging from Mach 0.4 to Mach 0.8. These tests allowed for the analysis of aspects such as aerodynamic behavior, stability, and structural deformation, as reported by the publication cited by the Spanish agency EFE.
The model demonstrated a maximum lift-to-drag ratio of about 20 at speeds below Mach 0.7. Researchers note that this configuration can provide greater aerodynamic efficiency, increased range, and lower energy consumption, although a full-scale aircraft does not yet exist.
According to local press, China is also studying the concept of an integrated cargo aircraft capable of carrying 120 tons with a range of about 6,500 kilometers; this project is currently in the conceptual stage.
CARDC has been involved in other Chinese aviation programs, including the commercial C919 aircraft and the Y-20 transport aircraft. Furthermore, China is developing the C929, a wide-body long-haul aircraft designed for approximately 280 passengers.
