The BWF Badminton World Championships 2026 kicked off at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi with a major surprise. Twenty-one-year-old Indian badminton player Ayush Shetty achieved something unexpected in his debut match.
Ayush Shetty, ranked 22nd in the world rankings, defeated the reigning world champion and world number one, Chinese player Shi Yuqi, in a tense match in the round of 64 of the tournament. The score in the match was 21-14, 13-21, 21-19.
At the beginning of the game, Ayush employed an aggressive tactic. Playing in front of a home audience, he managed to easily win the first set with a score of 21-14 thanks to powerful smashes and net play. However, in the next set, Chinese veteran Shi Yuqi managed to brilliantly fight back. He utilized the court's advantages by putting pressure on Ayush and won the second set with a score of 21-13, leveling the match at 1-1.
The third and final set was filled with constant shifts in tension. Ayush initially took the lead, but then the Chinese star slowly began to regain his position. When the match became very close, Ayush maintained his composure under pressure and won the set with a score of 21-19, thus concluding the match.
After winning the victory, Ayush Shetty shared his thoughts, stating that he felt some nervousness when Shi Yuqi tried to come back into the game and change the course of the match. Nevertheless, he constantly reminded himself of the need to remain calm and maintain an aggressive playing style. Thus, Ayush Shetty gave a decisive answer to his critics by overcoming the defeat suffered in the Asian Championships final.
