India lost to England with a score of 2:4; difficulties increased for the next match against Pakistan at the Hockey World Cup

In celebration of the 80th anniversary of Independence Day, India received a bright sporting gift: the Indian hockey team began its journey at the World Hockey Championship with a convincing 3-1 victory over Wales.

In its first match, the team demonstrated a powerful start to the tournament. The Indian team's next game is scheduled for Monday, August 17, against a strong opponent—England. A win in this match will allow the team to advance to the next stage with heightened morale.

The start of the game was somewhat tense for India. Wales adopted an aggressive stance from the beginning and put pressure on the Indian goal. Welsh player Pritchard created several excellent scoring opportunities. However, Indian goalkeeper Suraj managed to repel all of Wales' attacks, remaining unwavering, which allowed India to overcome the initial slump.

After the Indian players found their rhythm, they did not slow down. The first goal was scored by Sunil, who converted a penalty corner through dribbling. Immediately after this, a brilliant combination involving captain Harmanpreet Singh and Sanjay brought even more success. Harmanpreet, using a penalty corner, struck a precise shot directly into the goal, giving India a confident 2-0 lead.

In the first quarter, the Indian team looked dominant. The fast play of Hardik Singh and the versatile play of Jhermanpreet Singh broke down the Welsh defense. Some tension arose during the match when forward Shilanan Lakra sustained an injury. The game was temporarily suspended due to traces of blood on the field. Nevertheless, after first aid was administered, Shilanan returned to the bench.

In the second quarter, Wales attempted to come back into the game. Pritchard managed to beat the Indian goalkeeper with a strong shot, but luck was on India's side, and the ball deflected off the goalpost. Then Abhishek created an opportunity for India's third goal, but his shot was slightly inaccurate. However, captain Harmanpreet Singh corrected this mistake and scored the third goal.

Wales managed to score its first goal, thus balancing the game. After an incorrect tactical foul by the opponent, the referee requested a video review, and Wales was awarded a penalty. Goalkeeper Mohit showed bravery trying to stop the ball but could not keep it within the goal. The video referee confirmed that the ball had completely crossed the goal line before the referee's whistle blew, and Sam Wales scored the goal.

Before the start of the test series against Sri Lanka, the Indian team played a three-day practice match against SLC XI (Sri Lanka Cricket Eleven). This match took place at NCC Ground in Colombo, and during the second day (August 8), the Indian batsmen demonstrated impressive play. Devadhe Padikkal scored a magnificent century, and Ravindra Jadeja also managed a half-century innings.

However, among all the events, the fast bowler Gurnoor Barar attracted the most attention. He hit four sixes in one over against Sri Lanka's spinner, Dilum Sudira. Since Barar is primarily a fast bowler, such aggressive play from the lower order delighted the Indian dressing room. Head coach Gautam Gurjeev was also impressed by his hits and supported him with applause.

In the last over of the day, Dilum Sudira came to bowl. After Padikkal scored one run and passed the strike to Barar, the Indian pacer displayed the power of his bat. Padikkal strengthens his claim for the number three spot

During the second day of the game, India batted for 90 overs, scoring 357 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. The most successful Indian batsman on that day was Padikkal. His unbeaten performance of 142 runs made him a contender for a spot in the first team for the first Test. Sai Sudarshan could not recover from his injury and has been excluded from the Test series. With Sudarshan absent, the number three spot opened up, and thanks to Padikkal's big innings, his chances for this spot are considered high.

Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja decided to retire due to injury after scoring 63 runs. Manav Suthar (41 runs) and Kel Rahul (40 runs) also showed useful performances. Gurnoor Barar scored 36* runs off just 18 balls, including four sixes and two fours. While Padikkal, Rahul, Jadeja, and Suthar spent a lot of time at the crease, Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel could not play big innings.

Rishabh Pant fell victim to off-spinner Ramesh Mendis, scoring only two runs. He attempted a big shot over long-on against the spin, but the ball touched the edge of the bat and went towards long-off. Dhruv Jurel also managed only one run, and Mendis dismissed him. The poor performances of both batsmen in Sri Lanka's spin-friendly conditions present an area that the management team should pay attention to.

Before the start of the two-match test series between India and Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15, the Indian team will play a three-day friendly match against the local side Eleven on Friday, August 7. This match will take place at the Non-Descript Cricket Club (NCC) ground in Colombo and is considered extremely important for the Indian players as it will give them an opportunity to finalize their preparation for the conditions in Lanka and playing against spin bowling.

Prior to this match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) published a video in which Gautam Gambhir emphasized the need for complete readiness for everything ahead of the Test matches starting on August 15. In this video, Gambhir welcomed Saransh Jain and Akib Nabi to the squad. He highlighted Nabi's outstanding performance, which contributed to the Jammu and Kashmir team winning the Ranji championship.

Furthermore, Gambhir greeted the new field coach Shubdeep Ghosh, addressing him as 'Joy'. He mentioned that Ghosh has experience working with various teams. In the video, he urged the players to be ready to answer any question, regardless of whether the team attacks or defends in the first Test on August 15, and strongly recommended working on all necessary aspects during training.

Recent home games against South Africa and New Zealand showed that Indian batsmen faced significant difficulties against spin bowling. Therefore, this practice match against Sri Lanka's experienced spin attack will be a serious test for the Indian team. Captain Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have already been practicing against spin bowling at their training centers before traveling to Sri Lanka, but playing on Lankan pitches presents a completely different challenge.

Only three players in the current squad have experience participating in Test matches in Sri Lanka: KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav. India last held a Test series in Sri Lanka in 2017. Jasprit Bumrah is not participating in this tour due to injury, so Mohammed Siraj will take responsibility for fast bowling. He will be accompanied by Prasidh Krishna, Gunnor Barar, Manav Chatur, and Saransh Jain. Excluding Siraj and Kuldeep, the rest of the attacking unit is relatively inexperienced.

Earlier, Gunnor Barar and Saransh Jain demonstrated impressive performances for the India A team against Sri Lanka A in Galle last month and hope to maintain their form in this practice match. However, the weather might hinder the preparation of the Indian team. According to the meteorological department's forecast, short rains are expected in Colombo from Friday, which could affect the three-day practice match.
