Ravindra Jadeja reached another significant milestone in his illustrious Test career during the first match against Sri Lanka, which took place at the Galle International Stadium on Monday.
Jadeja, who returned to the squad after missing one match against Afghanistan, became the first Indian left-arm bowler to cross the 350-wicket mark in the longest international format.
This feat was achieved by Jadeja on the third day of the first Test at the Galle International Stadium, when he dismissed Sri Lankan all-rounder Kesara Nuwanda in the third session of the day.
The renowned Indian all-rounder got rid of Nuwanda when Shubman Gill caught the ball at the slips after the Sri Lankan batter attempted to hit the ball towards the slips but instead hit the thigh of the diving Yashasvi Jaiswal at the silly point. The ball bounced towards Gill, who completed the catch. As a result of this episode, Jadeja became the first Indian left-arm bowler to reach 350 wickets in Test format, surpassing former fast bowler Zahir Khan, who now has 311 wickets.
At the age of 37, he also became the fifth Indian in history to reach 350 wickets, joining players such as Anil Kumble (619), Ravichandran Ashwin (537), Kapil Dev (434), and Harbhajan Singh (417).
Furthermore, Jadeja became the third left-arm spinner in the world to reach this mark, joining players like Rangana Herath (433) and Daniel Vettori (362). During this achievement, he also set another important record.
Jadeja is now only the fourth player in Test history to achieve a double—more than 4000 runs and more than 350 Test wickets. Before him, this milestone was reached only by Kapil Dev (5248, 434), Ian Botham (5200, 383), and Daniel Vettori (4531, 362).
India managed to halt Sri Lanka's resistance in the third session after the hosts displayed brilliant play in the second half of the first innings and throughout the second session. After returning to the squad after a three-year break, Niroshan Dickwell scored a strong 80 runs, and young player Sonal Dinusha made 89, forming a partnership of 146 runs for the sixth wicket.
The hosts were in a difficult position at 90/5 before these two players started their fight, taking the team's score to 236/5, after which Prasidh Krishna dismissed veteran Dickwell. Shortly after this, Jadeja came out and dismissed Nuwanda, securing his milestone wicket. In the first innings, India scored 462 runs, with Devdutt Padikkal leading with 167 runs, and KL Rahul (82) and Dhruv Jurel (51) also making significant contributions on the second day of the match.
