Controversial businessman Vusimuzi Matlala appeared at the Madlanga Commission hearings for investigation. He categorically denied any ties to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and refused to provide further details about several high-ranking police officers implicated in allegations related to the Medicare24 corruption case.
Matlala, who himself faces corruption charges, answered questions regarding alleged connections with police leaders, including Mchunu, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nlankhulu Mkhvanazi, Deputy National Commissioner Shradack Sibiyu, and Intelligence Unit Head Major General Ferosa Khan.
Lead investigator, lawyer Malape Sello, also named the suspended 'Hawks' KwaZulu-Natal head Lesetji Senona and senior organized crime officer Robert Shibiri. However, Matlala did not provide exhaustive answers about all the mentioned officials.
Regarding Mchunu, Matlala was unequivocal. He stated: 'I have no relationship with Minister Senzo Mchunu. I have never met Mchunu nor had contact with him, nor attended any meetings where he was present.'
Sello questioned him about attempts to offer Mchunu a gift, benefit, or bribe. Matlala denied this, as well as dismissing any suggestions that he sought the minister's favour or communicated with him through intermediaries.
This denial is apparently intended to distance Matlala from accusations concerning businessman Brown Mogotosi, who is accused of attempting to make contact with Mchunu on his behalf.
Matlala was also asked about alleged connections with the suspended municipal police deputy commissioner of Ekurhuleni, Julius Mkhvanazi, and other police officials. The growing list of names intensifies questions about Matlala's supposed access to high-ranking law enforcement officials.
Nevertheless, he reported that he intentionally omitted some names from his supplementary statement, explaining that he had reasons for such exclusion. Matlala linked these omissions to audio recordings in which he allegedly claimed corrupt ties with high-ranking police officers, and disputed certain points of these recordings.
His refusal to provide detailed explanations leaves key questions unanswered regarding the alleged police network at the center of the investigation. The investigation continues.
