Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply criticized the Modi government and the National Testing Agency (NTA) after three UGC-NET exams in English, Commerce, and Sociology, scheduled for June 2026, were cancelled. Gandhi stated that while NTA made a mistake, students are bearing the consequences.
He raised the issue of a possible leak of these examination materials. Meanwhile, NTA issued a notification about conducting re-examinations for these three disciplines on September 9 and 10, 2026, citing serious flaws in the questions and repetition of old questions.
In social media, Rahul Gandhi wrote: 'Modi ji, look what your NTA has done. Exams held from June 22 to 30 were cancelled due to incorrectly formulated tests and repetition of old questions after two months.' He emphasized that in places like Kota, Dehradun, and Prayagraj, he has repeatedly stated that the education system has turned into an 'exploitation machine' (extractive machine) that deprives students of money, time, peace of mind, and self-confidence, without guaranteeing them a job in return.
Gandhi questioned the accountability of NTA and the government, noting that, like all organs of the Modi government, NTA never admits its mistakes. He insisted that the responsibility of the NTA leadership must be determined. Encouraging students who will retake the exams in September, Rahul stated that the fault lies not with the students but with the system created by Prime Minister Modi, which cannot conduct the exam properly.
According to the official NTA notification, serious errors in facts, translation, and text entry were found in the English, Commerce, and Sociology exams. The English exam will take place on September 9 in session 1, and the Commerce exam in session 2. The retest for Sociology will be held on September 10 in session 1. NTA clarified that students will not be charged a re-examination fee, and the number of seats will not be reduced.
The agency also reported that results for the other 84 subjects will be announced according to the established schedule, and there will be no delays in issuing electronic certificates for JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility, and Ph.D. admissions. Furthermore, 6% for Assistant Professor eligibility will be selected based on the high number of participants in both the June and retest, and the number of seats in any subject will not be reduced.
In conclusion, he noted that students who prepared for years and traveled to remote centers are forced to suffer the consequences of a system failure. An accusation was made that the education system has become a machine that takes away students' money, time, and mental health.
