Following the departure of Relebokhile Mofokeng, Orlando Pirates coach Abdelslam Waddu urged Patrick Masvangani to take on greater creative responsibility in the team.
CHALLENGE
During the Betway Premier League match, Patrick Masvangani of Orlando Pirates faced a challenge from Siphamandala Zikhali of AmaZulu. Orlando Pirates coach Abdelslam Waddu also tasked Masvangani with increasing his activity.
Masvangani demonstrated his potential during Pirates' 3-0 victory over Chippa United in the Betway Premier League match held at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Sunday. He assisted Gampani Lungu in scoring the first goal. The twenty-seven-year-old player also started the season strongly in the MTN8 tournament, registering an assist before scoring in the quarter-final match against Durban City with a score of 2-1.
Since Mofokeng is no longer part of the squad, Waddu believes that Masvangani is capable of becoming an important figure, replacing some of the creativity previously provided by the young forward. However, the Pirates coach demands more from Masvangani than just moments of attacking quality.
He is working with the midfielder to make him more direct and influential in ball possession, especially in connecting the Pirates' defense with the attacking players. Gampani Lungu was joined by Lebone Siyema and Daniel Msenda among the scorers when Orlando Pirates secured three points to overtake Kaizer Chiefs in the #BetwayPrem table.
Waddu noted that anyone who understands football can see Tito's fantastic quality. He emphasized that if the player uses the game to his advantage by playing forward, it aligns with what they were told: 'to bring the game forward.' He added that Masvangani can become the link between defenders and forwards.
Furthermore, Waddu believes that Masvangani is capable of scoring more goals, not just acting as a playmaker. The coach stated: 'Not only that, he is capable of delivering in the final third, but he is also a player who can score.'
The coach revealed that Masvangani's development included individual tactical work, using video analysis to identify areas where he could be more effective. 'We have had many video sessions with him. And he is a smart boy; he is a smart boy. He knows exactly what we expect from him, and he showed it today.'
Although Waddu is pleased with Masvangani's start to the campaign, he understands that consistency will be crucial if the midfielder wants to establish himself as one of Pirates' leading creative players. 'And as you said, indeed, with Rele's departure, he has a large space to play and a very important role for our club,' he said. Since Pirates have already shown attacking potential this season, Masvangani now has the opportunity to make this creative role his own.
