The Manchester Super Giants secured their first-ever victory in the Men's The Hundred tournament by performing brilliantly in the final. In a thrilling match held on August 16th at Lord's, they defeated Trent Rockets by five wickets.
For the Manchester team, which had previously lost twice in the final, this third chance proved unforgettable. The main hero of this historic victory was New Zealander Tim Seifert, who made a difficult task easy with an explosive innings, scoring 72 off 38 balls.
Manchester had reached the final twice before, in 2022 and 2023, but failed to win the trophy. In 2022, they were stopped by Trent Rockets, and the following year, hopes were dashed by Oval Invincibles. This time, Manchester managed to get revenge by knocking Trent out of the title race.
The Super Giants franchise won its first T20 title, which was a very emotional moment for the team associated with Sanjiv Goyank.
Coming onto the field first, Trent Rockets started a strong attack with Finn Allen and Ben Duckett, scoring 48 runs. However, Manchester's quick wickets could not interrupt the initial partnership. Captain Jos Buttler brought in Afghan spinner Nur Ahmad, who quickly regained the initiative for the Manchester team by dismissing both batsmen in four balls. Following this, Newry Donald launched a counterattack, scoring 38 runs off 19 balls. Nevertheless, wickets continued to fall on the other end, and Trent's score reached 97/5 at one point.
In the concluding part of the match, Louis Gregory (32 runs) and Michelle Jenner (20 runs without loss) actively scored runs. Trent Rockets added 61 runs in the last 30 balls, allowing them to set a challenging target of 158 runs while losing 8 wickets. The average score in the season at Lord's was 141 runs, making the task for Manchester quite difficult.
Chasing a target of 159 runs, Tim Seifert immediately demonstrated his intentions. He put pressure on the Trent bowlers, scoring 14 runs in the first five balls against Mohammad Amir. Then, Seifert, along with Paul Walter, scored 61 runs in just 31 balls. He reached the half-century mark in only 23 balls, including seven sixes and four fours. Captain Buttler also contributed, scoring 23 runs off 14 balls, including three sixes. Luis DuPleu helped ease the chase, playing a useful 27 runs without loss off 18 balls.
When Tim Seifert left the field, Manchester needed only 23 runs off 22 balls, and it seemed the match would end easily. However, Trent brought back the intensity in the final, consistently taking wickets. Newry Donald sent Heinrich Klaasen to the pavilion with an excellent catch, and Michael Breswell was dismissed without scoring. The match ultimately went down to the last five balls. At this critical moment, Liam Dawson did not make mistakes. He hit a six over mid-wicket off Ben Sanderson's ball, thus securing Manchester's historic victory with two balls remaining.
Seifert had a magnificent tournament, becoming the hero of the final. Over the season, he scored 394 runs and ranked second in the leading run-scorers list. He was awarded the tournament's most valuable player award for his outstanding performance.
