The payment service from Meta, known as WhatsApp Pay, processed 167.89 million UPI transactions worth ₹12,957.07 crore in July, becoming the eighth largest UPI application by transaction volume. This figure more than doubled the transaction volume compared to the previous year.
In July 2025, WhatsApp Pay conducted 74.6 million transactions worth ₹5,412.58 crore, ranking 11th among UPI applications. Notably, WhatsApp Pay reached the milestone of 100 million transactions for the first time in December 2025.
The growth in payment volumes within this messenger occurred approximately 19 months after the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) lifted restrictions on onboarding WhatsApp Pay users in December 2024.
The apex body for retail payments granted WhatsApp approval in November 2020 to operate in the UPI system under a phased multi-bank model, initially allowing the connection of 20 million users. This limit was increased to 40 million in 2021, and then to 100 million in 2022. In 2024, restrictions on the number of users WhatsApp could onboard were completely removed.
WhatsApp Pay UPI Transaction Volumes Over the Years
According to NPCI data, in July 2026, the largest UPI applications remained PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. PhonePe processed 10.85 billion UPI transactions, followed by Google Pay with 7.64 billion and Paytm with 1.90 billion.
