In Prayagraj is a unique Shiva temple known to pilgrims as Natheshwarnath Mahadeva Mandir or the 'Temple of Mahadeva with Locks'. This temple has gained widespread fame due to its unique tradition. Pilgrims visiting this place come with the hope that their wishes will be granted and install a lock on the temple complex grounds.
There is a belief that Bollenat will definitely hear their prayers. When a wish comes true, pilgrims return to the temple to open the lock they installed and worship Lord Shiva according to all rituals.
The walls, gates, and adjacent parts of the temple complex are adorned with thousands of locks. Each of these locks is a symbol of the faith, hope, and devotion of some pilgrim. Many visitors write their name, address, or some special mark on the locks to easily identify their lock after their wish is fulfilled.
Pilgrims claim that this tradition has existed for many years, and Bollenat's blessing helps them achieve their goals. Thanks to this faith, a large number of people arrive here daily to pray to Lord Shiva, attaching their wishes to the locks.
Daily ceremonies of Rudrabhishek, Jalabhishek, bhajans, and aarti are held in the temple. During special dates, such as the month of Sawan, Mondays, and Mahashivaratri, a huge number of pilgrims gather here. The entire temple fills with shouts of 'Har Har Mahadeva' and 'Bam Bam Bole', which emphasizes the unique combination of faith and devotion that gives Natheshwarnath Mahadeva Mandir special significance among the main religious sites of Prayagraj.
Every lock attached in this temple tells a story of hope, faith, and unwavering devotion to Bollenat. The number of locks is so great that they have to be removed to make space, and old locks are kept in a separate room. This work is carried out regularly, every few days, to make room for new pilgrims.
