Actor Yash dispels rumors about the budget of the film 'Ramayana' by explaining financial details

Residents are eagerly awaiting the long-awaited film 'Ramayana,' which is scheduled for release in 2026. Its recently released trailer has elicited mixed reactions from the public. Actor Gajendra Chauhan, who portrayed Yudhishthira in B.R. Chopra's series 'Mahabharata,' offered his assessment of the trailer, noting that he was displeased with Ranbir's portrayal.

Gajendra Chauhan expressed dissatisfaction with the 'Ramayana' trailer, which boasts a budget of 4000 crore. He also raised questions regarding the casting choices and the actors' attire. In an interview for the Indian audience, Gajendra shared his thoughts on the trailer. He stated that after watching it, he did not feel impressed.

He recalled his role in B.R. Chopra's 'Ramayana,' where he played Dasharatha, and mentioned that the scene with Kaikeyi and Dasharatha was captivating. This scene required an entire day of shooting because Ravi Chopra insisted it be shot in one take to maintain its impact, calling this scene the 'soul of Ramayana.'

Gajendra Chauhan acknowledged that the creators invested heavily in the film's production, and the producers aimed to create a good project. However, he found the graphics insufficiently impressive, suggesting that realism would have been better utilized instead. He also noted that the scene with Kaikeyi and Vardhan did not impress him because their costumes appeared modern. He emphasized that in their version of 'Ramayana,' Kaikeyi wore black clothing.

Although a final verdict can only be reached after watching the entire film, he stated that 'Ramayana' and 'Mahabharata' reflect culture and civilization. He warned that adding modern graphical elements or creating palaces using graphics as a backdrop strips the work of its essence. He added that older versions of 'Ramayana' and 'Mahabharata' were popular precisely because they were realistic, not because of the presence of special effects.

Regarding the cast, he observed that many stars today have established images, which makes it difficult for them to embody mythological roles, and audiences might not accept them in those roles. While Ranbir Kapoor looks good in his role, he noted that until the film is released, it is difficult to judge whether his image aligns with our perception of Rama—his appearance, royal status, etc.

He highly praised Arun Govil's casting as Dasharatha following his role as Rama. The film 'Ramayana' is planned for theatrical release to coincide with Diwali this year. Sai Pallavi, Sani Deol, Ravi Dubey, and Yash Aham will also participate in the film.

Any new adaptation or series based on the Ramayana is invariably compared to classic works such as Ramanagan Saagar's 'Ramayana' or the Japanese anime 'Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama'. In this context, Oma Raut's film 'Adipurush' is often cited as an example of how the Ramayana should not be portrayed.

Currently, Nitesh Tiwari's film 'Ramayana' is being discussed regarding its casting choices and visual effects. However, there was another, more controversial project created in America that proved more contentious than 'Adipurush'.

In 2008, American artist Nina Paley released an animated musical titled 'Sita Sings the Blues'. This film was inspired by her personal experiences and time spent in India. Nina promoted it as 'the biggest breakup story to date.'

The film presented a light and feminist interpretation of the Ramayana, focusing particularly on Sita's pain and perspective. A 2D style, inspired by vector graphics, Indian shadow puppetry, and miniature paintings of the Rajputs and Pahari, was used for the animation. Furthermore, Nina incorporated elements of her personal life to demonstrate parallels between the goddess's experiences and those of a modern woman going through a relationship breakup. The entire film was accompanied by 1920s jazz songs.

Nina positioned this work as a call for women's justice, truth, and equality. In 2009, some copies of the film were released on DVD, and later it became available for free download on the official website.

Despite social media not being as developed as it is today, 'Sita Sings the Blues' quickly went viral online. Critics highly praised the film, noting a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 85% on Popcorn Meter. Audiences lauded both the plot and the unique animation style.

However, praise was accompanied by opposition. In 2009, the organization 'Hindu Jan Jagriti Samite' filed a petition demanding a complete ban on the film, asserting that the depiction of Lord Rama was offensive. Despite the protests, the film's popularity grew in India and other countries.

In a 2010 interview, Nina Paley responded to the dissatisfaction of Indians. She noted that for many people, Ramanagan Saagar's 'Ramayana' from the 1980s is the true story, and any other interpretation is perceived by them as incorrect. In Nina's view, people do not feel the need to watch or accept other versions.

The main feature and simultaneously the stumbling block of the film was precisely this. Part of the audience welcomed the open portrayal of suffering, struggle, and Sita's point of view, giving her a voice. Another part opposed it because Lord Rama was depicted differently from the traditional idealized image. This is what made the film a constant subject of debate.

In 2011, during a screening of the film at the San Jose Museum of Art in the USA, a protest was held by 'Hindu Jan Jagriti Samite'. Following this, screenings of the film were canceled at the StarLight Pavilion in New York and at the Art Chamber in Goa. In subsequent years, in 2017, Nina Paley also came under scrutiny due to views related to her transgender community, but her film 'Sita Sings the Blues' remains a subject of discussion. Some view it as a modern and alternative interpretation of the Ramayana, while others believe it offended religious sentiments. Currently, 'Sita Sings the Blues' is available to watch on YouTube.

Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor is actively working on a Ramayana film that will be released in two parts. This epic picture has been in production for several years. The first part was shot a year ago, and the filming of the second part is currently underway. Simultaneously, the first part of the Ramayana film will be shown in theaters, and the film's team is actively promoting it.

Recently, a trailer for the Ramayana film was released, in which viewers saw additional scenes with Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama. However, many viewers have expressed dissatisfaction with his casting choice, as well as the fact that the film is being shot entirely on a green screen.

In an interview with The Direct, Ranbir admitted that adapting such a massive story into two parts is a complex task. In his opinion, fully depicting the Ramayana would require a 10-part film. Nevertheless, creating two parts and writing the script to meet this requirement has been a huge challenge. Ranbir also commented on the idea of giving the film a modern touch. He recalled that several years ago, the film Adipurush was released with a similar concept—created for a new generation. However, this film failed at the box office.

Regarding this idea, Ranbir stated that the most significant change today is only related to the technologies used in creating such films. Furthermore, he believes that the closer the story is to its simplicity and true spirit, the more it touches people's hearts and gains popularity. He added: 'I don't think Ramayana needs to be retold. I believe this epic remains relevant over 4000 years. Lord Rama was a guide for millions of people around the world, and I suppose everything said in it about courage, the victory of good over evil, truth, forgiveness, compassion, and pride is a life lesson.'

Ranbir concluded the conversation with an update on the filming of the second part of the Ramayana film. He reported that the filming of the second part is nearly 50% complete. The second episode promises to be even grander and more engaging, and it will feature a very important role for Hanuman, played by Sani Deol, which Ranbir believes audiences will enjoy.
