Students and graduates of the National Law College of Indian University (NILSU) protested the invitation of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Suryakant and the Chairman of the Bar Council of India (BCI) Manan Kumar Mishra to the graduation ceremony.
In a statement issued on August 15, they criticized the decision by the Bar Council of India to suspend admissions at NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad. Although the Bar Council of India later withdrew this decision, NILSU students and graduates supported the students of NALSAR.
Their statement noted that even after the measures against NALSAR were revoked, initiating such actions against students and faculty of any state institution raises many questions. Consequently, they questioned the role and actions of the Chairman of the Bar Council of India and the Council itself.
The statement was signed by 165 students who are due to graduate in the class of 2026, 409 current students, and 128 alumni. The students asserted that the admission suspension procedures and the initiation of an investigation by the Bar Council of India were illegal, even after these measures were withdrawn.
The students emphasized that the graduation ceremony is a very important event in a student's life. The statement read: 'Inviting people to the graduation ceremony whom they have publicly shown contempt and condescension towards is insulting and shameful, and it mocks the students and their struggle.'
The students clearly declared their solidarity with NALSAR and their readiness to remain united with them unconditionally. They demand that the Bar Council of India apologize to the students and faculty of NALSAR. The statement also pointed out that the steps taken by the Bar Council of India negatively affected not only the students and faculty of NALSAR but also the freedom of expression of students across the country.
Disagreement was expressed regarding the participation of Manan Kumar Mishra in the graduation ceremony without him taking responsibility for his conduct. They support NALSAR's demand for a reconsideration of the decision to invite the CJI as the chief guest.
