Actress Sharmila Tagore and former captain of the Indian cricket team, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, entered into an interfaith marriage that sparked much discussion. After the wedding, Sharmila adopted Islam. Recently, her daughter Saba Pataudi openly discussed the religious atmosphere in the family and how her mother taught her Islam in childhood, and it was within this religion that she grew up.
In an interview with the YouTube channel Big Bollywood, Saba Pataudi stated that she considers herself religious and feels a deep connection to Islam, asserting that for her, God is Allah. At the same time, she expresses respect and reverence for all other religions. Saba added that after marrying Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, her mother converted to Islam and passed down the traditions and beliefs of this religion to the children.
Her mother explained the basics of Islam and Ramadan to her. However, Saba emphasized that her mother never tried to impose any religion on her, granting her complete freedom of choice regarding faith. She also noted that no worship of Hindu deities took place in their home, nor did they visit temples.
Saba also shared information about the religious views in the family. She reported that there was never pressure in the family to instill one specific ideology. This led to different members of the family forming their own individual religious views. Citing examples of her brother Saif Ali Khan and sister Soha Ali Khan, she noted that both married people of different religions. She believes that faith and spirituality are a personal preference of each person and cannot be forced.
Saba mentioned that various festivals were celebrated in their home, including Diwali, Holi, and Christmas. She believes it was very right that her parents never tried to impose one religion on them, and she recommends that all parents do the same with their children.
Both Sharmila Tagore and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi belonged to different religions. Sharmila comes from a Bengali Hindu family and is related to the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's family. Meanwhile, Mansur Ali Khan was a Muslim and belonged to the Pataudi Shahi family. Since they came from different religious families, their marriage was not simple.
Sharmila, after becoming Saif's mother, converted to Islam after the wedding and changed her name to Aisha. For her, this was not an easy decision, a serious step in life that she took with great understanding. Despite the marriage being accompanied by opposition and threats, she did not back down. There were times when reports of tension in their relationship emerged, but they managed to maintain their union.
