All Blacks coach Dave Rennie confirmed that flanker Richie Moaniga will not be able to participate in the starting test match against the Springboks next Saturday. Nevertheless, several previously injured players are ready to return to fitness at Ellis Park stadium.
Following his team's victory over the Bulls with a score of 50–19 in Pretoria on Saturday evening, Rennie stated that midfielder Cam Roigard and versatile defender Will Jordan are likely to feature in the first test match. However, Damian McKenzie's status remains uncertain.
Moaniga arrived in South Africa late Friday evening after completing club commitments abroad. He will require time to familiarize himself with the All Blacks systems before being considered for the second test match in Cape Town on August 29.
Rennie noted: 'Richie arrived late last night. He is excited and full of energy. He has studied a lot already. We will spend next week getting him accustomed to our game.'
He specified that Moaniga will not be included in the squad for the first test match. Instead, he will get game time against the Lions on August 25, three days after the first match, and will be considered for the second test.
Rennie expressed great confidence in Roigard and Jordan, who have recovered from injuries and completed training load this week. 'Will and Cam trained this week, and we are quite confident they will be available for Ellis Park, but we want them to have a full week of training,' he said. 'They are meeting all the necessary requirements.'
Regarding Damian, Rennie added: 'We are less certain about Damian, but he has a chance to play in the first test match. It is expected that they will all be available.'
The coach also emphasized that the convincing victory over the Bulls gave the All Blacks confidence ahead of the opening match against the world champions. 'We scored 50 points against a very good Bulls team. That is a positive point,' he stated. 'We played against a team that was ready to attack. They put up resistance, but our set pieces, especially the scrum, were very strong. Furthermore, our discipline today was much better.'
