Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso stated that Kaiser Chiefs' switch to a five-player defense created an unexpected tactical challenge for his team during the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the FNB stadium.

Fernando Da Cruz set up the Chiefs team in a 5-3-2 formation, using an extra defender to restrict the space available to Sundowns and create a basis for counterattacks. Cardoso noted that they did not expect to face such a five-man defense, but the team was ready to analyze what was happening on the field, knowing that the opponent's coach likes to prepare for the opposition.
The Portuguese coach admitted that Chiefs' approach was aimed at unsettling Sundowns' possession-based game while simultaneously creating opportunities in transitional phases. Cardoso believed that the Chiefs players understood that Sundowns' attacking play could leave free zones to be exploited.
He emphasized the importance of not losing the match, noting that both teams were unwilling to yield today. Cardoso added: 'I think we were more aiming for a win, and that is because we demonstrated this ability on the field, and Kaiser Chiefs realized that they could score from transition—and it happened, and sometimes teams win such games.'
Sundowns ultimately suffered from one such counterattack when Langelihle Phili scored a goal for Chiefs, after which Cassius Mailula helped the guests secure one point. Despite the differences in approaches, Cardoso highly praised the quality and intensity of the confrontation, calling it a 'beautiful football match played with natural aggression reflecting the level of commitment of the teams on the field.'
The result put an end to Sundowns' perfect start in the Betway Premiership campaign, while Chiefs maintained their unbeaten record, securing two wins and one draw in the first three matches. Da Cruz later explained that injuries partially influenced his decision to change the formation, but also stressed the need to control the areas that Sundowns could exploit.
The tactical gamble by the Chiefs coach ultimately brought another valuable result against the reigning African champion. However, Cardoso's comments point to the difficulty of facing the Chiefs team, which is willing to sacrifice some possession and attacking resources for defensive stability and counterattacking opportunities. Neither side could find a winner after Mailula's equalizing goal, allowing Chiefs to remain in the top of the table, and Sundowns to gain one point in a match where both coaches' tactical approaches were fully demonstrated.
