Devdhad Padikkal demonstrated outstanding batting performance in the Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle. The twenty-six-year-old player scored his first career Test century, allowing the Indian team to take a strong position from day one. Previously, Padikkal had played sparingly in Tests, with his last match being in November 2024. He capitalized on the opportunity during the visit to Sri Lanka, continuing to accumulate runs in home cricket.
For the left-handed batsman, this innings was not just a story of reaching three figures. He had to battle fatigue on the challenging Galle pitch, under conditions of intense heat and high humidity. Devdhad Padikkal noted that playing until the third session was difficult, and he also felt nervous approaching the hundred-run milestone.
Due to the heat and humidity in Galle, players were constantly losing fluids, which intensified the feeling of exhaustion. In a video published by the BCCI, Padikkal stated: 'The most important thing for me in this innings is perseverance. Especially in the third session, I felt very tired. It was very hot, and constant sweating led to fluid loss. In such conditions, it was necessary to keep moving forward.'
The Galle pitch also did not allow batsmen to play aggressively freely. According to Devdhad Padikkal, in such circumstances, it is crucial to avoid poor shots and maintain concentration for a long time. In the first innings, he built an important partnership of 150 runs with Kell Rahul. Both players cautiously attacked against Sri Lankan spinners Prabhat Jayasuriya and Kesara Nuwanta, hitting powerfully when opportunities arose.
Kell Rahul was forced to leave the field due to cramps after scoring 77 runs. Despite this, Padikkal maintained his wicket and reached his first Test hundred. Moreover, Padikkal was already showing excellent form, having scored a century in a friendly match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI before the main series.
The biggest story behind this century for Devdhad Padikkal was his wait. He shared that it was not easy to remain patient while being out of the team for almost two years. Padikkal added: 'My last Test was in 2024. I had to wait a long time, and watching from the sidelines is never easy. But this time gave me the opportunity to work on my game and improve the aspects that needed refinement.'
After an impressive performance in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and IPL tournaments, Padikkal regained his spot in the Indian national team. His century in Galle further solidified his claim for the number three spot. Padikkal also admitted that after scoring 90 runs, he began to feel the pressure associated with a first Test hundred. He noted that he was slightly nervous near reaching the century mark, but ultimately, achieving the three figures was a relief.
