Meteorologists warn of heavy rainfall in several Indian states and avalanches in the mountains

The monsoon is fully active in various parts of the country. The Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts moderate to heavy rains in several states of North, Central, East, Northeast, West, and South India on Tuesday. Very heavy rains, thunderstorms, squalls, and strong winds are expected in some areas.

According to the IMD, the monsoon trough line has shifted south of its usual position and intensified, leading to the possibility of heavy rainfall in many regions of the country. The southward shift of the trough line strengthens the monsoon winds, increasing precipitation in coastal and central areas.

Furthermore, a low-pressure area formed in central Madhya Pradesh and surrounding areas is affecting the weather in Central India. There is also a possibility that cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal may transform into a low-pressure area around August 12, which will lead to continued rains in eastern and central India in the coming days.

According to the meteorological department, rain is possible in several places in Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab on August 11, with heavy rain forecasted in some areas. Sudden heavy downpours with thunderstorms are expected during the day. Cloudiness will persist in Delhi-NCR in the coming days, with numerous periods of light and moderate rain possible. Continuous periodic rain is also expected in the capital in the coming days, although despite the precipitation, temperature and humidity may remain high.

According to the Lucknow center, the monsoon will be active in many parts of Uttar Pradesh on August 11. There is a high probability of thunderstorms in some places in western Uttar Pradesh, and thunderstorms are also possible in eastern Uttar Pradesh. However, the impact of the rainfall in the state will be uneven. The Meteorological Department noted that the districts of western Uttar Pradesh and Bundelkhand are more sensitive to heavy rains, while other parts are expected to receive moderate to normal rainfall.

Extensive rains are expected in Uttarakhand on August 11, with heavy precipitation in some places. There is a threat of heavy or very heavy rains in areas such as Dehradun, Bageshwar, Nainital, and Haridwar. Rains in the state are forecast to continue until August 16. In Himachal Pradesh, heavy or very heavy rain is possible in some places on August 11. The weather in the state is expected to be humid until August 15, and after August 12, the activity of heavy rains may increase. Monsoon phenomena may also persist in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and surrounding areas for the next few days.

The Meteorological Department has called for special vigilance regarding the eastern districts of Rajasthan. A warning for heavy, very heavy, and extremely heavy rainfall has been issued for various districts in eastern Rajasthan on August 11. In some parts of the state, rains may continue until August 13. Meanwhile, weather conditions are expected to improve in western Rajasthan from August 14.

The low-pressure area over northern Madhya Pradesh is the main cause of rains in Central India. Rain, including heavy rain, is expected in several places in western Madhya Pradesh on August 11. Prolonged periods of heavy rainfall are also expected in eastern Madhya Pradesh. There is a risk of thunderstorms and lightning with heavy downpours in Chhattisgarh. After August 12, the activity of heavy rains in the state may intensify. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings for heavy, very heavy, and severe rains in several areas of Central India.

In Eastern India, rains may persist in Odisha, West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. Heavy rains with thunderstorms and strong winds are expected in West Bengal and Odisha. Heavy rains are forecasted in Odisha on August 11, and heavy or very heavy precipitation is possible in some areas on August 12. The period from August 12 to 15 may bring extremely heavy downpours in some places. There is a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in Bihar and Jharkhand. The activity of heavy rains in Jharkhand may increase from August 13.

In Northeast India, rains may continue in Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. Heavy rains are forecasted in some places in these states. Thunderstorms are also possible in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Further expansion of rainfall activity across the entire Northeast region is expected from August 12.

Widespread rain is expected in Konkan and Goa in West India. Heavy rains are possible in some places in Gujarat on August 11. The period of heavy rains in central Maharashtra may extend until August 12, and periodic rain is expected in several districts of Maharashtra for the next week.

In South India, the monsoon is active in the coastal states of Karnataka and Kerala.

According to the meteorological service's five-day forecast, from 8:30 AM on August 11 to 8:30 AM on August 12, there is a high probability of heavy rain in districts such as Agra, Itawa, Ariya, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jansi, Lalitpur, and surrounding areas. This means that the impact of rainfall may be more noticeable in Bundelkhand and neighboring areas on Tuesday. In these districts, heavy rains could lead to flooding of low-lying areas and disruption of local movement. Residents, especially in districts like Jansi, Lalitpur, Mahoba, Hamirpur, and Jalaun, are advised to monitor weather conditions.

The probability of rain persists not only in Bundelkhand but also in Western Uttar Pradesh on August 11. The meteorological service predicts a high probability of rain and thunderstorms in some parts of Western UP. Similar activity is also expected in some parts of Eastern UP. The meteorological service warning table indicates a high probability of heavy rain in some parts of Western UP for August 11, while no heavy rain warning has been issued for Eastern UP.

According to the meteorological service, due to the influence of a cyclonic circulation extending to the middle tropospheric layer over southwestern Uttar Pradesh, a low-pressure area has formed. This allowed the monsoon stream to remain close to its usual position. Furthermore, the formation of another low-pressure area was predicted under the influence of a cyclonic circulation extending to the upper tropospheric layer over South Bengal and adjacent Bangladesh territory. Since this monsoon stream is moving in a northwest direction, an intensification of the monsoon flow is expected in the coming days, especially in the southern parts of the state. This is why an increase in rainfall activity is predicted in the southern districts of the state. The meteorological service also forecasts rain in several districts on August 11.

According to the meteorological service data, as of August 7, 2026, the total rainfall in Uttar Pradesh for this monsoon season was below normal. Eastern Uttar Pradesh recorded 325.6 mm of rain against a normal of 436.7 mm, representing a 25 percent decrease. Western Uttar Pradesh recorded 339.3 mm of rain against a normal of 370.3 mm, which is 8 percent below normal. Considering all of Uttar Pradesh, 331.3 mm of rain was recorded against a normal of 409.0 mm, indicating an overall decrease in monsoon rainfall in the state by 19 percent. This suggests that despite constant rain in some areas, the overall monsoon rainfall figure for the state remains below normal.

The monsoon situation is heterogeneous across UP. In some districts, the amount of rainfall significantly exceeded the norm. According to the meteorological service, Morena, Muzaffarnagar, and Sambal recorded more than 60 percent more rainfall than normal. Meanwhile, Etawah, Itawa, Firozabad, and Hamirpur saw an increase in rainfall by 20–59 percent. Conversely, in several districts, the amount of rainfall was significantly below the norm: Bhadohi, Dewaria, Jaunpur, Kanpur Dehat, Kaushambi, Kushinagar, Mau, Pilibhit, and Shamli recorded a decrease of up to 60 percent.

According to the meteorological service data up to August 7, significant rainfall was observed in various parts of the state. In Gunnaur Sambal, 134 mm of rain was recorded, classified as heavy or very heavy rain. Additionally, Fatehgarh Farrukhabad recorded 68.2 mm, in Kaymganj — 65.3 mm, in Nara Buldanshgar — 110.4 mm, in Rath Hamirpur — 93 mm, in Kalpi Jalaun — 86.8 mm, in Kehada Baghpat — 84 mm, in Eka Firozabad — 76 mm, in Charkhari Mahoba — 74 mm, and in Jansath Muzaffarnagar — 67.6 mm.

The pace of the monsoon season in the country remains slower than normal, with a recorded decrease in precipitation of 12 percent so far. Nevertheless, the morning in Delhi-NCR began with drizzling rain typical of the Sawan season. The Meteorological Department forecasts that intense rains will continue for the next week in many regions, especially in the northeastern, eastern, and some southern parts of the country.

The Meteorological Department (IMD) is closely monitoring the situation in several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, and Telangana. IMD has issued warnings for heavy and very heavy rainfall for 50 districts in the eastern and western parts of the capital, Uttar Pradesh, starting from Wednesday until Friday. A warning for strong winds up to 40 kilometers per hour and thunderstorms has also been issued in about 36 districts.

According to IMD data, heavy or very heavy rains may be observed in the northeastern and adjacent eastern districts over the next two days. It is predicted that heavy rain will continue in several places for another five days. On August 5, Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive 21 centimeters or more of rainfall. From August 5 to 10, extensive rains are forecast in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Additionally, good and very heavy rains may occur in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in the Gangetic plains of West Bengal, in Odisha, as well as in the foothills of the Himalayas in West Bengal and Sikkim. Heavy rains are expected in Jharkhand from August 5 to 8 and on August 10, while in Bihar, on August 5 and 6. Heavy precipitation is also possible in several locations in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, and inland South Karnataka over the next three days.

Given the heavy rainfall, IMD has issued a low to moderate flash flood warning for the next 24 hours for the northeastern districts, the foothills of West Bengal, Sikkim, and some parts of the Western Himalayas. All districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Sikkim are on high alert. Many districts of Assam and Meghalaya, including Kokrajhar, Bongigaon, Dubri, Kamrup Raman, Daring, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, as well as Hasi, Garo, and Jaintia Hills, are also included in the warning zone. In Manipur, the districts of Senapati, Ukhrul, Thoubal, Chandel, and Churachandpur have been warned, and in Nagaland, Kohima, Dimapur, Phak, Tuensang, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng, and Mon.

Furthermore, the risk of flash floods is also predicted for some parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand. Warnings have been issued for the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur in Himachal Pradesh; Doda, Kathua, and Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir; and Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Nainital, Champawat, and Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand. The Meteorological Department has urged people to exercise extra caution in low-lying areas, along rivers and streams, and in landslide-prone zones, and to monitor local weather updates.

In Himachal Pradesh, no quick relief from the rains is expected either. According to Sandeep Sharma, a scientist from the Shimla meteorological center, the monsoon season will remain active in the state for the next five to six days, with light or moderate, and in some places heavy, rains possible until August 7. Rain is forecasted to continue in the mid-mountain and plain areas on August 8 and 9. According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rains are likely in the districts of Kangra and Mandi on August 5, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan, and Sirmaur on August 6, and Kangra, Chamba, and Mandi on August 7. Visibility in some parts of Solan, Shimla, and Sirmaur may be significantly reduced due to dense clouds and heavy rain.

According to the July monsoon data, Himachal Pradesh recorded 6 percent more rainfall than normal. The maximum increase was noted in Kullu, where rainfall increased by 62 percent, while Hamirpur and Leh-Spiti recorded a decrease of 43 percent. However, over the entire monsoon season from June 1 to August 3, the state saw an overall decrease in precipitation of 9 percent. Sandeep Sharma noted that despite the intermittent nature of the rainfall, no significant drop in temperature is expected. Maximum temperatures in Shimla and Manali will be 20–22 degrees Celsius, in Solan and Dharamshala—28–30 degrees, and in Mandi, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Una, and Pauri Sahib—from 32 to 35 degrees Celsius.

Amidst the continuous rains across the country, footage of floods, inundations, and landslides appears from various regions. Even ten days after the flood in Vansada, Navsari district, Gujarat, all traces of destruction are visible. Many houses have collapsed, roads are damaged, and permanent and temporary dwellings have been swept away by the strong current. Approximately 21 people died in this disaster, and the situation in villages such as Champavari and Navadat has not yet normalized.

In Godadar, Surat, motorcyclist Sandeep Yadav died after falling into a deep pit on the road during the rain. In Asod village, rural Vadodara, a risky rescue operation was conducted to safely extract a buffalo stuck between the overflowing Vishwamitri river and crocodiles. In Vikasnagar, Uttarakhand, a sudden strong current completely covered the road in the Johdi area, Kalsi district. Many vehicles were blocked in mud and water, and one driver attempted to cross the surging stream, endangering his life.

In Rajasthan, the incessant rain has continued since Tuesday evening, the fifth day of Sawan. Due to heavy rains, one vehicle sank in an underpass at the Hanumangarh railway junction. In Silesarh, Alwar, a strong current was observed in the Garhwa Ji waterfall for the first time this season, attracting a large number of locals and tourists. At the same time, in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, despite the heavy rains, women stood in long queues to buy fertilizers for rice, corn, and sugarcane cultivation, which was actively featured on social media.
