If you want to try something new and delicious for breakfast, onion uttapam can be the perfect choice. This article presents a simple recipe for this dish, which can be prepared in just a few minutes.
Breakfast is important not only to give the body energy but also to maintain vitality and improve mood throughout the day. If you are tired of monotonous dishes and desire variety, onion uttapam is an excellent option. It is a simple and very tasty South Indian dish.
It is made from a batter based on rice and lentils, topped with chopped onions, tomatoes, green peppers, and cilantro. It can be served with coconut or tomato sauce. The step-by-step cooking process is presented next.
What ingredients are needed to make onion uttapam?
For preparation, you need: 2 cups of rice, 1 cup of lentils (urad dal), salt to taste, 2 onions, finely chopped, 1 tomato, finely chopped, 1-2 green peppers, finely chopped cilantro, oil as needed, and 1-2 teaspoons of chaat masala.
First, the rice and lentils should be thoroughly washed. Then, both ingredients should be soaked in water separately or together for about 6 hours; they can also be soaked overnight. After that, the water from the soaked rice and lentils is drained, and they are ground in a blender until they reach a fine crumb consistency. The resulting mixture is transferred to a large bowl and covered for several hours to allow the batter to prepare well.
Next, salt to taste is added to the batter and mixed thoroughly. Then, the finely chopped onion, tomato, green pepper, and cilantro are incorporated, after which all components are gently mixed.
Cooking uttapam on a griddle
Heat a griddle and pour a little oil onto it. Then, scoop some batter onto the hot griddle, ensuring it does not spread too thinly but maintains a moderate thickness. A little onion, tomato, and cilantro can be added on top of the uttapam. A little oil is added around the edges, and the uttapam is cooked over medium heat. When the bottom side turns golden brown, it is carefully flipped and fried on the other side until cooked.
After the uttapam is completely cooked on both sides, it is removed to a plate and sprinkled with chaat masala. The remaining portions of the batter are cooked similarly. The hot onion uttapam is served with coconut sauce, tomato sauce, or sambar. In addition to breakfast, it can be eaten as a light lunch or dinner.
