This Saturday, the largest statue of the Virgin Mary in Europe was solemnly unveiled in Poland. This sculpture reaches a height of 55.6 meters, surpassing the size of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro (38.5 meters) and also exceeding the height of Christ Rei in Schwäbödzin, which reaches 52.5 meters with its pedestal and was opened in 2010.
The opening ceremony for the statue, located in the Konotopia parish (northern Poland), took place on the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and was open to the public. Approximately 2,500 cubic meters of concrete and a complex steel structure designed to withstand the region's strong winds were used to erect this structure.
The project was financed by magnate Roman Karkosik, considered one of the wealthiest people in the country, as a sign of personal gratitude following his daughter's serious illness. However, this initiative has sparked controversy because Karkosik recently announced mass layoffs affecting about 200 people (nearly half of the workforce) at his metallurgical plant.
The creators of the project are sculptor Adam Jakub Matejkowski and designer Alexander Skorski. They emphasized that the significance of the work lies not only in its record size but also in its ability to attract people as a place for prayer, reflection, and pilgrimage.
For their part, local authorities and residents express confidence that this monument will help revitalize small businesses and services in the region, which is predominantly rural and agricultural. Thanks to this statue, Poland continues its tradition of building large religious monuments after the fall of communism, boasting among the most impressive European sanctuaries and monuments, such as the Licheń Basilica, construction of which was funded by private donations and opened in 2004.
The tallest statue of the Virgin Mary in the world is the World Peace Tower – Mother of All Asia, located in Batangas (Philippines), with a height of 98.15 meters, including the pedestal.
