The first day of the Galle Test match between the Indian national team and the host nation Sri Lanka concluded with an impressive performance by the Indian team. By the end of the day, after 73 overs, India scored 288 runs, losing only two batsmen.
The young left-hander from Karnataka, Devdhadhat Padikkal, demonstrated outstanding batting play, scoring a hundred. This marks his second century in the special club, as he achieved this milestone in his third Test match.
Padikkal replaced Sai Sudarshan at number three and fully utilized the opportunities. Recently, playing against spinners had been a serious challenge for the Indian team, but Padikkal handled them easily. He maintained the pace of his innings through excellent timing and shot rotation.
Second Indian cricketer to achieve the feat on August 15th
Thanks to this innings, Devdhadhat Padikkal set a significant record: he became the second Indian male player to score a century in international cricket on India's day—August 15th. Before him, only his teammate from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Virat Kohli, had achieved this feat.
Virat Kohli reached this record in 2019 during an ODI match against West Indies held in Port-of-Spain, scoring 114 not out runs.
Kohli's unique record
When Virat completed his century, August 15th had already arrived in India. Chasing the target of 255 runs set by Duckworth-Lewis (DLS) method, Kohli scored 14 fours, maintaining a strike rate of 115.15, and helped the team secure the victory by forming a 120-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer (65 runs).
Interestingly, Virat Kohli is the only Indian player to have scored international centuries on both August 15th and January 26th (Republic Day). Specifically, on January 26, 2012, Kohli scored his first Test century against Australia in Adelaide.
The duo that shone in the IPL
Virat Kohli and Devdhadhat Padikkal together demonstrated numerous winning performances for RCB. In the RCB teams, which were consecutive champions in 2025 and 2026, Padikkal and Kohli made important contributions with the bat.
