The Chairman of the Bar Council of India, Manan Kumar Mishra, apologized to law students on Saturday after the council made a controversial decision to temporarily suspend the registration of graduates from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Sciences (NALSAR) University of Law for the year 2026 as advocates, according to Bar and Bench.
A dispute arose regarding the invitation of Chief Judge Suryakant as a guest of honor at the graduation ceremony of NALSAR University in Hyderabad. In response to this, students began expressing their disagreement.
Subsequently, the Bar Council of India decided to prohibit the law graduates of the class of 2026 from this university from practicing as advocates. This ruling sparked strong opposition.
As a result of the mass resistance, the Bar Council of India was forced to change its initial decision.
The Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal strongly urged party leaders on Sunday to exercise caution in their statements and avoid comments that might 'please the Bharatiya Janata Party' (BJP).
This appeal followed remarks by Shashi Tharoor regarding Rahul Gandhi's 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' program. Tharoor suggested that this student initiative failed to resonate with Generation Z as much as the protests organized under the leadership of the Congress Janata Party (CJP).
