Springboks Coach Rassie Erasmus Announces Team Readiness for Series Against All Blacks

Rassie Erasmus is currently facing complex selection decisions as the Springboks prepare their squad to challenge the All Blacks in Ellis Park later this month. Given that injuries are still being evaluated, the head coach confirmed the possibility of expanding the squad to as many as 44 players, keeping the door open for various players to earn a spot.

After securing a tough 17-10 victory over Argentina in Buenos Aires on Saturday, the world champions are now focusing entirely on New Zealand and the upcoming Test match in Johannesburg. Erasmus stated, “We don't want to trim the squad.” He elaborated that the current roster is around 40 players (15 based in South Africa and 26 who toured with them in Argentina, totaling 41), and since New Zealand is touring with 44 players, they prefer to increase their own numbers to match, ensuring no one needs to be cut.

Erasmus further clarified that while the 15 players who trained domestically are part of the setup, it does not guarantee they will start or be in the match-day 23. The focus now shifts to assessing fitness among all players to select the team best equipped to defeat New Zealand in the first Test.

Deon Fourie proved highly valuable in the opening match in Cape Town. His contributions at the breakdown, which included slowing down the ball and securing turnovers, alongside his defensive efforts, showcased that even at 39 years old, he maintains the capability to compete at the elite level. At one point, Fourie executed three critical tackles within a fifteen-second span, successfully stopping a promising attack by New Zealand.

Furthermore, Fourie scored an important try for the Cape side, helping to bring them back into contention when the All Blacks held the advantage. This caliber of performance is expected to draw significant attention from Erasmus and his coaching staff. Upon returning to South Africa, the Sharks (on Tuesday, August 11) and Bulls (on Saturday, August 15) will offer the Bok management two additional opportunities to observe the All Blacks and identify potential additions to the expanded squad for the Tests.

Springbok rugby coach Rassie Erasmus sent an encouraging message to young South African athletes participating in the Junior World Athletics Championships in the USA. He urged the young athletes to believe in themselves, embrace the pressure of international competition, and proudly represent their country, as the South African team started the tournament in Eugene, Oregon, with great promise.

The world rugby champion recorded a special address for the national team before the championships in the USA, encouraging the teenagers to trust the hard work that allowed them to reach the world stage. In a video clip published on the Team SA social media, Erasmus told the team: 'Success is not always victory. It is simply presence and representing your country, wearing your country's colors. Accept this—you are here, and you are doing it for South Africa.'

These words proved timely when 16-year-old shot putter Jacob van Dijk won South Africa's first medal at the championship on Wednesday. After a confident qualification throw of 19.09 m, Van Dijk set a personal record in the final—19.80 m, earning a bronze medal. Alessandro Borges from Brazil won gold with a result of 20.35 m, while Si-hoon Park from South Korea took silver with a result of 20.31 m.

Erasmus focused much of his message on the importance of belief, asserting that confidence is built through preparation, not just desire. He stated: 'Hard work gives you belief. Your team around you, your fathers, your mothers, your coaches, and everyone who invested in you believes in you. You hardly have the right not to believe in yourself because so many other people believe in you.'

This philosophy underpinned the recent success of the Springboks, and Erasmus believes it can be applied equally to young athletes competing on the world stage. He also tried to change the perception of anxiety often accompanying major championships, advising athletes to accept nervousness rather than fear it. Erasmus noted: 'Everyone thinks nerves mean you are worried, but nerves mean you care. You care because you are representing your family, your coaches, and South Africa. If you are nervous because you don't want to disappoint people, those are good nerves.'

South Africa's first day showed there is still much to see after Van Dijk's performance. The quad in the 4x400m relay twice broke the South African junior record. Rhino Rickert, Zant van der Merwe, Abelins Schoman, and Isabella Hunter ran 3:22.12 in the semi-finals, and then Rickert, Schoman, Isabella Hunter, and David Strong improved the time to 3:21.48 in the final, finishing sixth overall.

Javelin thrower Jan-Hendrik Heymans was also among the gold favorites, launching the javelin 76.02 m in qualification, six meters further than any other participant. Marques Olivier also reached the final with a throw of 68.77 m. On the track, Marco Ferreira advanced to the men's 100m final after winning the semi-final with a time of 10.13 seconds, and Ashlyn Norman qualified for the women's long jump final with a jump of 6.11 m. Werner Gouws, Emil Els, and Caris van Rooyen also advanced to their respective 800m semi-finals.

Erasmus concluded his message by reminding athletes not to let fear become their main opponent. He said: 'My worst feeling has always been regret. Regret over not believing or trusting myself. The athlete next to you is as nervous as you are. Believe in yourself, enjoy representing South Africa, and enjoy the moment.'

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus refuted suggestions that Argentina is an unsportsmanlike team, despite the scandal that surrounded the Los Pumas after their defeat to England in the Rugby World Cup.

Los Pumas faced heavy criticism following the match, which ended 34:21 in July. This tense match resulted in seven yellow cards, an accusation of improper conduct by World Rugby against winger Tomás Albornoz for physical contact with referee Angus Gardner, and the sudden departure of head coach Felipe Contepomi from the post-match press conference because he perceived it as disrespect from England.

Before the upcoming match in Buenos Aires against the Springboks, Los Pumas legend Federico Mendes urged the current generation to 'behave and control themselves.'

However, Erasmus emphasized that South Africa anticipates a very intense confrontation, not one plagued by disciplinary issues. He noted that the team knows Argentina well, as they play each other twice a year, apart from the current year.

'We know Argentina well. We play them twice a year, except this year, so we know their players, and they know us,' Erasmus stated on Tuesday. He added that some Springboks players have played with Argentinians in French or Japanese clubs, which allowed them to build good relationships with those players.

Regarding the officiating incident in the previous game, Erasmus said it was not up for comment, as referee Christoph Ridley would be working in the upcoming match. He acknowledged that new protocols make communication with the referee before the game difficult but stressed that he has never encountered Argentina being a negative or overly aggressive team. He concluded that while they are tough and physically strong players, he has never considered them unsportsmanlike.

The match against England was marred by numerous controversial moments: seven yellow cards between the teams and several scuffles on the field. Following this, Albornoz was sanctioned by World Rugby after clashing with Gardner when a late try that could have equalized the score was disallowed.

Contepomi also cut short his media conference just four minutes after the match, accusing England of 'disrespect' due to loud celebrations and music coming from the adjacent dressing room. Similar to Erasmus, Contepomi used this game to expand the squad, releasing ten new players, most of whom are young, in preparation for next year's World Cup.

Erasmus is also balancing the need to win with the opportunity to integrate players returning from injury, as well as giving chances to less experienced team members. He stated: 'Primarily, we want to win. If we win, the margin of victory is not that important. We have many key players returning from injuries, as well as some who are not yet settled in the team, such as Cameron Hanekom, Elryeg Lou, and Boan Winter, players with few matches.' He added that this means the game will not be perfect, but if they improve, develop in the game, and synchronize, the game will be in their favor, provided the playing time is set for the players returning from injury.
