Mico functioned as the 'identity' for the voice mode of the assistant, presenting real-time reactions through animations and facial expressions. Although audio dialogue features remain, they now occur without the visual presence of the character.
Microsoft itself stated, on a page detailing the discarded AI functionalities, that 'Mico helped us learn about cordiality, expressiveness, and how people want to interact with AI. These learnings will shape the future of Copilot.'
The first mentions of Mico date back to July 2025, which is three months before its official launch. Consequently, the character did not reach ten months acting as the face of Microsoft's AI.
Although it has been 'turned off' in Copilot, Mico will maintain its presence in the AI's Learn Live feature, where it will act as a tutor with real-time voice and animations. The company justified that this is where the character 'has more room to grow, with tutoring sessions that give Mico more situations to react and teach.'
As reported by The Verge, Mico joins Microsoft's collection of assistant characters. This gallery includes Clippy, the dog Rover, who appeared in Windows XP search, and Cortana, which was adapted from the Halo franchise to serve as an assistant in Windows 10.
Currently, Microsoft is in the process of unifying the Copilot applications, intended for both individual consumers and Microsoft 365 Copilot, aimed at professionals and corporate clients.
The new consolidated application will offer the chatbot and other functionalities, but certain capabilities will be discontinued. These include group conversations, AI-generated podcasts, experimental Labs features, and Deep Research, the latter being replaced by Research for paying users.
Anand Mahindra characterized the class of 2026 as the 'superhero generation,' emphasizing that their ability to adapt amid the development of artificial intelligence (AI), geopolitical conflicts, climate change, and the erosion of old certainties will be their defining strength.
Speaking at the fifth annual graduation ceremony of Mahindra University, the university chancellor noted that today's graduates have grown up in a world where events that once happened 'once in a lifetime' now occur annually.
Mahindra stated that they have experienced a pandemic that disrupted education and daily life, are witnessing wars transforming the global order, and see climate change moving from prediction to reality. Furthermore, he mentioned that questions of truth have become more complex, social media is changing society, and AI is performing tasks previously considered human prerogatives.
The rapid pace of change has weakened traditional career concepts. According to Mahindra, familiar templates such as 'a comfortable old doctor, lawyer, engineer, IAS official, MBA' are no longer relevant. New professions appear almost instantly, just as quickly as old ones disappear, and the rules of the game are constantly changing.
Comparing the experiences of different generations, he observed that the future seemed like a 'clearly paved road' to parents. However, current graduates are forced to 'try to find footing while the ground shakes beneath them.' To explain how unusual external circumstances can awaken new abilities, Mahindra used the example of the fictional superhero group X-Men. He explained that the story of this group speaks not just of superpowers, but of evolution in response to a world different from the past.
Mahindra asserted that the pandemic, technological changes, and the collapse of established dogmas have transformed the mindset of the current generation. He stated that, much like the X-Men, they have developed skills that previous generations could not have imagined: comfort with uncertainty, the ability to work with machines, and an habit of constant change. He called this their 'mutant strength': the capacity to develop and thrive in conditions that would paralyze past generations.
Nevertheless, he warned that technological adaptability alone is insufficient. Quoting Swami Vivekananda's statement that 'all power is within you,' Mahindra stressed that outstanding abilities are not limited to the chosen few but often remain dormant until circumstances demand their manifestation.
He added that the most important qualities for life—courage, resilience, and compassion—are already inherent in people and await the moment when life allows them to manifest. Mahindra defined humanity as the greatest strength of this generation, especially in light of the growing volume of tasks taken on by AI. He noted that when discussing AI capabilities, people forget that only humans can provide things like ethics, humility, compassion, curiosity, and moral purpose.
The strengths of the graduates will stem both from their potential for growth and from their inner world. The critical test will be how they direct these forces and their moral compass toward serving a purpose greater than themselves. By combining the X-Men idea of adapting to external conditions with Vivekananda's emphasis on inner power, Mahindra proposed a so-called 'superpower formula' for this generation.
He concluded that the future requires both aspects—the ability to evolve and the ability to be more deeply human. 'The dual ability to evolve externally and awaken internally is your true superpower,' he said. Calling the graduating class 'our team of superheroes,' Mahindra expressed hope that their strengths would serve both themselves and the world.
The chief guest of the ceremony was Rajiv Bajaj, whom Mahindra highly praised for innovation, global leadership, and contribution to education and skill development. He mentioned the structural transformation of Bajaj Auto, the revival of the Chetak model for the electric era, and the company's presence in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Bajaj also inaugurated the Bajaj Engineering and Skills Training Center at the university. Pradip Khosla, Chancellor of the University of California San Diego, was present as the guest of honor.
