Projections indicate that maximum temperatures in Europe are expected to exceed 30°C for approximately 350 million individuals, excluding Turkey, which represents about three in five inhabitants of the continent.
This assessment was based on estimates provided by the German Meteorological Service and demographic projections for 2025 from the European Union's Joint Research Centre. The data is also aligned with information from the Austrian non-governmental organization (NGO) Klimadashboard.
Considering that Europe is one of the continents warming up fastest, the continent will face another heatwave this August. On Thursday, there was a forecast that at least 135 million people would be subject to temperatures above 35°C, according to the 03:00 GMT weather model.
Currently, extreme heat is focused on the western and southern regions of Europe. In France, temperatures are expected to exceed 35°C in areas where 46 million people reside.
The heatwave tends to expand to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, countries that were less affected in previous days. In Belgium, this temperature level is expected for more than 10 million inhabitants, almost nine out of ten. In Germany, 34 million people in the west will be affected, while in the Netherlands, the estimated number is around 12 million.
Regarding the United Kingdom, the forecast points to a drop in temperatures on the current day, although they remain above 30°C in the southeast, without reaching 35°C as occurred on Thursday.
In the south of the continent, it is anticipated that the thermometer will rise above 35°C in areas inhabited by 24 million people in Spain and 18 million in Italy, marking a reduction compared to the previous day.
It is important to note that residents of a specific area are included in the count if the model predicts temperatures above 30°C or 35°C at any time of the day in that location.
David Jablonski, a member of Klimadashboard, informed AFP that due to the model's precision being approximately 6.5 kilometers, it cannot fully capture the effects of urban heat islands. For this reason, the NGO clarified on its portal 'European Heat Tracker' that the analysis 'probably underestimates the number of people affected in densely populated urban areas.'
